Cette année, 107 bières différentes ont été élues « meilleure bière du monde ».

Cent sept. Le même été. Par le même concours.

Mes amis, j'ai recompté. Voici ce que ça donne.

Les World B**r Awards ont distribué environ 1 780 médailles pour environ 3 000 bières inscrites. Six bières sur dix repartent décorées.

Le World B**r Cup, le même été : 353 médailles pour 8 166 bières. Quatre pour cent.

Ce n'est pas de la triche, c'est de l'arithmétique. Les médailles sont attribuées PAYS PAR PAYS : 107 styles multipliés par 62 pays. Plus le concours recrute de pays, plus il fabrique de champions.

Le président du jury a dégusté 450 bières et en a trouvé cinq ou six d'exceptionnelles. La structure, elle, en médaille 60 %.

L'inscription coûte 307,50 € par bière — avec une remise sur volume à partir de la sixième. Un concours qui sélectionne n'a aucune raison de vous pousser à en présenter plus. Un fournisseur de médailles, si.

Aucune brasserie ne triche là-dedans. Elles paient, elles gagnent, elles communiquent. N'importe quelle entreprise ferait pareil.

Mais la prochaine fois que vous verrez une pastille dorée sur une bouteille, vous saurez quoi demander : combien concouraient dans cette catégorie ?

La bière belge n'a pas besoin d'un éditeur de magazines de Norwich pour lui dire qu'elle est bonne. Sa culture est au patrimoine de l'UNESCO depuis 2016. Ça vaut mieux qu'une pastille à 307,50 €.

This year, 107 different b**rs were crowned "world's best b**r."

A hundred and seven. Same summer. Same competition.

So I recounted. Here's what it looks like.

The World B**r Awards handed out around 1,780 medals for around 3,000 entries. Six b**rs in ten walk away decorated.

The World B**r Cup, same summer: 353 medals for 8,166 entries. Four percent.

This isn't cheating, it's arithmetic. Medals are awarded COUNTRY BY COUNTRY: 107 styles multiplied by 62 countries. The more countries the competition recruits, the more champions it manufactures.

The chair of judges tasted 450 b**rs and found five or six exceptional ones. The structure medals about 60%.

Entry costs £262 a b**r — with a volume discount from the sixth. A competition that selects has no reason to push you to enter more. A medal supplier does.

No brewery is cheating here. They pay, they win, they announce it. Any business would.

But next time you see a gold sticker on a bottle, you'll know what to ask: how many were competing in that category?

Belgian b**r doesn't need a Norwich magazine publisher to tell it that it's good. Its culture has been UNESCO heritage since 2016. That beats a gold sticker at £262.

A taste of Bordeaux — in a bottle. 🇫🇷🍰 Canelat is a very unusual b**r from La Toque Cuivrée, the Bordeaux specialist best known for its iconic canelés. Launched as a limited edition in 2024, it brings together two very different Bordeaux traditions: blonde b**r and the city's famous caramelised pastry. Only 3,000 bottles were initially produced.

The name is a little piece of local history too: canelat is the Gascon name for the canelé. The b**r itself is light and gently aromatic, with the unmistakable vanilla, caramel and pastry-like character of the famous Bordeaux treat, but without becoming overly sweet or bitter. A rather curious combination — and surprisingly refreshing on a sunny afternoon.

Bordeaux in liquid form: part b**r, part canelé, and completely unexpected. 6% ABV. Santé! 🍺

A blonde with a beard — and a serious rugby pedigree.
🇫🇷🏉☀️ From La Rochelle comes Uini’s B**r, an easy-drinking French craft Pale Ale created with rugby powerhouse Uini Atonio.
Brewed in the south of Charente-Maritime, this golden blonde gets its character from New Zealand hops — a nod to Atonio’s birthplace — balanced by a touch of malt and oats for extra softness and a silky mouthfeel. Light, subtly hazy and gently aromatic, it brings a delicate hop character without turning the bitterness up too high. Refreshing, smooth and made for sunny afternoons by the pool — a blonde with just the right amount of beard. 5% ABV.

A taste of the French craft scene — with a tropical twist from King’s Brau. 🇫🇷🌿

Based in France, King’s Brau is part of the new generation of independent breweries bringing modern b**r styles to a country traditionally known for w**e. Their IPA Blonde is a perfect example of that evolution: a French take on an American-inspired classic, built around freshness, drinkability and aromatic hops.

Golden and bright in the glass, this IPA opens with lively notes of citrus, passion fruit and other exotic fruits. The malt profile stays light and crisp, letting the hops take the lead, while a gentle bitterness brings balance without overpowering the finish.

Back to French Flanders — with the region's flagship craft name. 🇫🇷 The Brasserie du Pays Flamand in Merville is one of northern France's great modern success stories, and Anosteké is its star range. This is their "Freestyle #13," part of a series where each team member designs their own recipe — here a single-hop NEIPA showcasing the newer American hop Talus, fermented with Nordic Kveik yeast. The result is soft and hazy, juicy and aromatic, with grapefruit, pine and dank tropical notes, kept light and easy at just 5%. Creative, playful, and seriously well made. 5% ABV. Santé! 🍺

Feet in the Atlantic sand — Lacanau, on the Gironde coast. 🇫🇷🏄‍♀️ La Canaulaise was born in 2018, founded by Céline Anderson, who turned a passion for natural chemistry into brewing right by the ocean, less than an hour from Bordeaux. Everything about it breathes the coast: the surfer-at-sunset label, the salt air, the dunes and pines. The IPA itself is a floral, gently peppery ale with a touch of caramel malt and a moderate, well-mannered bitterness — a tasting IPA rather than a hop bomb. Sea spray and warm sand in a bottle. 6.1% ABV. Santé! 🍺

One more from Brouhaha in Maleny. 🇦🇺 After their playful strawberry-rhubarb sour, here's the brewery flexing its hoppy muscles with a straight-up India Pale Ale. Deep golden and clear under a generous head, it's a proper modern IPA: bold resinous and citrus hop character, a solid malt backbone to carry it, and a firm, satisfying bitterness on the finish. No gimmicks, just a well-built, confident IPA from one of Queensland's most decorated craft breweries. 6.2% ABV. Cheers! 🍺
