Over 80% of Bulgarians Live in Just Eight Provinces

New data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) show a highly uneven population distribution in Bulgaria, with more than 41.4% of residents concentrated in just eight of the country’s 28 provinces as of the end of 2025.

Sofia continues to dominate demographically, with a population exceeding 1.3 million people, maintaining its position as the largest administrative region in the country. Alongside the capital, seven other provinces also exceed 100,000 residents: Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Sliven, and Pleven.

The data also highlight ongoing demographic decline in less populated areas, with depopulation trends continuing across rural Bulgaria.

By the end of 2025, 192 settlements had no permanent residents at all, with the highest numbers of abandoned villages recorded in Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo provinces.

In addition, a further 1,280 villages are now home to extremely small populations, each ranging between just one and 49 inhabitants, underlining the scale of rural shrinkage.

Overall, Bulgaria’s population stands at 6,437,360 people, distributed across 28 provinces, 265 municipalities, and 5,256 settlements, according to NSI figures.
