Mount Vugizo in Bujumbura hosts a monument in memory of Prince Louis Rwagasore, hero of independence and son of King Mwambutsa Bangiricenge. Assassinated on 13 October 1961 shortly after becoming the very first Prime Minister of Burundi, Rwagasore played a decisive role in the country’s struggle for independence. Every 13 October, the whole country commemorates his bravery and heroism. His resting place has become a memorial site symbolizing the country’s aspiration for freedom and sovereignty. The monument has a sober design with three pointed arches in the colors of the national flag and, on the right side, plaques bearing the names of each former “arrondissement” (administrative divisions). The atmosphere is peaceful and suitable for reflection. On each side of the mausoleum stand the tombs of two other notable Burundians whose deaths remain mysterious: Ignace Kamatari, elder brother of Mwami Mwambutsa (killed in May 1964), and Pierre Ngendandumwe, a Hutu Prime Minister assassinated in January 1965.
