The boom was based, in part, on a large influx of overseas companies looking to base their business operations here. Housing requirements for the staff had to be met and all of the supporting service centres had to be expanded or improved to meet the additional needs. It was this demand that provided the catalyst for the formation of D & J Construction Company Ltd. Fagundo and John DeSilva Pereir
a were working independently as building contractors in the mid 60's when they decided to join forces in order to submit a bid to build a new classroom block for the Whitney Institute School. This initial venture was a success. The cornerstone of the business had been laid and in 1967 the two men incorporated the company. The business grew from this initial success. In the first year of operation the value of work completed exceeded one million dollars and, what is more important, an impressive list of clients with repeat business was established. D & J Construction has grown in size, capability and experience and they are recognized for their ability to complete projects on schedule and within the established budget to the satisfaction of the client. The need for full-service operation equipped to meet new and more sophisticated demands of a growing community predicated the move to create D & J Excavating and Landscaping Services Co. Ltd. (DJX) in 1978. Over the years, the rolling equipment stock has increased to include 25 pieces of major equipment sufficient to service any in-ground or above-ground infrastructure work or major equipment needed. Additionally, in 1996, DJX acquired the rights to the Bierman Quarry and annually process over 35,000 cubic yards of sand, gravel and rubble fill through a newly purchased crushing plant. The material is available to the industry for ready mixed concrete, masonry block, plaster sand, and structural fill. DJX is now the largest excavation company on the Island and carries an office staff and workforce of over 35 persons.
