TBT | WHAT TIME CANNOT ERASE.

Some stories begin long before they ever reach the mats.

Hélio, Rolker, Royler and Rickson Gracie.

One family. One story. A legacy built from one generation to the next.

Today, after sharing a moment on the mats with his brother Royler, Rickson wrote:

“Being on the mat with my brother Royler Gracie feeds my soul.”

And perhaps that is one of the greatest strengths of Jiu Jitsu.

Time passes. Life changes. Challenges come.

But some bonds remain.

The ones who support us, strengthen us and remind us that we never walk alone.

Jiu Jitsu is built on technique, discipline and courage.

But it is also built on family, respect and brotherhood.

The legacy passes from one generation to the next. So does the brotherhood.

November 12, 1993. Denver, Colorado.

At the first UFC, Rorion Gracie presented his father, Hélio Gracie, with a tribute honoring his lifetime dedicated to Jiu Jitsu.

Visibly moved, Hélio spoke about seeing his sons take what he had dedicated his life to and bring it to Denver, with the whole world watching:

“What my sons are accomplishing here in Denver, for the whole world, is the reward I receive for my 65 years of sweat and blood.”

After 65 years of teaching, training and dedicating his life to Jiu Jitsu, Hélio was there to see his sons take their family’s Jiu Jitsu to a new stage.

The first UFC opened doors for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to go far beyond the academy and eventually become known around the world.

Almost three decades later, watching Hélio speak about that moment makes it easy to understand just how much those 65 years meant.

Some people practice Jiu Jitsu. Some teach it. And some become part of the story that makes the art what it is today.

Álvaro Barreto was one of them.

A direct student of Hélio Gracie, Álvaro began training at the age of 10 and spent more than six decades teaching, shaping generations of practitioners and passing forward the knowledge he received from the masters who came before him.

That is the beauty of Jiu Jitsu. What is given to you on the mat is never truly yours. You carry it, you refine it, and one day, you pass it on.

Álvaro Barreto passed away at 84, leaving behind much more than titles and belts. He left knowledge, students, stories and a legacy that will continue on the mats.

Rest in peace, Grandmaster.

The Jiu Jitsu you helped build will keep moving forward.

Before the titles. Before the big stages. Before becoming one of the most respected names in world Jiu Jitsu.

He was just a white belt kid.

It was during those early days that his professor, Vinicius “Draculino”, another legend of Jiu Jitsu, gave him the nickname that would follow him throughout his career: Preguiça.

What started as a gym nickname became part of a career built at the highest level of the sport.

At 34, with the biggest titles in Jiu Jitsu already to his name, both in the gi and without it, Felipe “Preguiça” can look back and say that he has already made history.

But he’s not done writing it.

This Saturday, he steps back on the mats for another chapter, facing Nicholas Meregali at Spaten Fight Night 3 in the third fight of their trilogy.

And in September, he’ll be back at ADCC, chasing something no one has ever done before: winning the absolute division for the second time.

The white belt kid is long gone.

The story isn’t.

Two names connected by the same Jiu Jitsu lineage: Carlson Gracie, De La Riva, and one of the most influential guards in the game.

Today, Carlson Gracie would have turned 93.

Or maybe 94.

With Carlson, even his age had a story.

The most widely accepted date is August 13, 1933. But Carlson preferred to celebrate on the 12th. Superstition, they say. There are also accounts that the old master made a point of hiding his age.

That was Carlson.

He was never meant to fit into a number, a rule, or a convention.

He was meant to fight.

And it was through fighting that he built his name. No shortcuts, no distance between teacher and student, and no fear of putting his Jiu-Jitsu to the test.

Carlson built a generation that didn’t just want to learn how to fight. He built a team that changed the course of Jiu-Jitsu history.

That may be one of the greatest legacies he left behind.

Because Carlson Gracie didn’t just build a team.

He built an army built for war.

And it lives on.
