TBT to remember where the MMA we know today truly came from.

Early 1990s. Rio de Janeiro. Grajaú. Long before the octagon, major productions, and million dollar contracts, Jiu Jitsu and luta livre met to decide, in real terms, which art truly worked in combat. It was not entertainment. It was identity, honor, and sporting survival.

In August 1991, that rivalry left the academies and reached open television in prime time. An unthinkable moment for that era. There were no guarantees, no clear rules, no real safety. There was courage. People who put themselves on the line when no one knew where it would lead.

Wallid Ismail was one of those names. An athlete, a necessary provocateur, and a visionary. He helped put Jiu Jitsu to the test when few would accept the risk. Today, he is one of the most influential MMA entrepreneurs, responsible for discovering talent and helping structure the sport in Brazil.

Fábio Gurgel represented the technique back then and built an empire afterward. A world champion, leader, and founder of one of the most powerful teams in the history of Jiu Jitsu, responsible for shaping champions and influencing the sport on a global scale.

Murilo Bustamante was the bridge between eras. Present in that early scene and, years later, a UFC champion and cofounder of one of the greatest teams in MMA history, helping shape the professional sport as the world knows it today.

From the clash between Jiu Jitsu and luta livre came respect. From respect came evolution. And from that evolution, the MMA the world watches today.

This TBT is for those who were there, for those who stepped forward when there was still no stage.

TBT – Muzio de Angelis

Today’s TBT goes to a black belt whose journey runs through the very foundation of our sport: Muzio de Angelis.

Muzio is one of those names that carry history in the weave of the gi. He started early, still a kid, growing up inside the world of traditional old school Jiu Jitsu, with tough training sessions, classic lineage, and the culture of discipline and respect that shaped the early generations. He was raised around the roots of the art, learning Jiu Jitsu at a time when everything was smaller, closer, and deeply meaningful.

Competitor, instructor, mentor to many black belts, and one of the most respected referees on the circuit. Muzio moves with ease between the mats, the warm up areas, the rulebook, and the coaching corner, always carrying the essence of true Jiu Jitsu.

This TBT becomes even more special now that Muzio has earned his coral belt. It is a rank that reflects decades of dedication, consistency, legacy, and real impact on the Jiu Jitsu community. Only a few reach this level, and even fewer arrive with a story as strong as his.

Today we celebrate a lifetime on the mats, a voice that helped shape the evolution of the sport, and someone who continues to influence athletes, instructors, and referees around the world.

BJ Penn marked Jiu Jitsu in a different way. When he came to Brazil as a kid, he put on the kimono and dove straight into the heavy routine at Nova União, which at the time had one of the toughest teams on the planet. It was there, on Dedé Pederneiras’ mats, training every day with absolute killers, that he sharpened his game, built pace, cardio and that real competitor grip.

All that work exploded in 2000, when he won the IBJJF World Championship as a black belt and became the first American to ever reach that top level. A massive milestone. He always said Jiu Jitsu changed his life, that without the gentle art he’d just be another guy chilling on the beach. He never stopped thanking Brazil, Dedé, the Gracie family and everyone who helped spread Jiu Jitsu around the world.

With that solid foundation, BJ took Jiu Jitsu into the UFC and made history. He submitted, he dominated, he became a champion in two divisions and earned a spot in the Hall of Fame. Always representing the gentle art with pressure, technique and heart.

Today’s TBT is to honor that journey and recognize someone who opened doors for an entire generation. Seeing BJ Penn smile is remembering everything he’s done for Jiu Jitsu, for MMA and for our story.

TBT to honor one of the greatest influences on how the world understands Jiu Jitsu. Rickson Gracie has always been a reference for solid fundamentals, calm under pressure, and a deep understanding of the art that only those who truly live the tatame can recognize.

In his book Comfort in Darkness - The Invisible Power of Jiu Jitsu, he shares part of this depth. And the quote on the image, “I hope to be remembered one day as a martial artist who represented Jiu Jitsu with honor, personal rectitude, and respect.”, captures exactly what he built throughout his journey.

Rickson never just spoke about these values. He lived them. In training, in conduct, and in the way he sees Jiu Jitsu as a path. The book reinforces what every practitioner feels when studying his story.

A highly recommended read for anyone who wants to understand the most authentic and essential side of the art.

And since tomorrow, November 21st, is his birthday, today’s TBT is dedicated to this legend who continues to inspire generations.

On the 30th anniversary of Nova União (), one of its founders, Professor Wendell Alexander (), received the red and white belt, a symbol of mastery, legacy, and a lifetime dedicated to the art.

A moment that celebrates not only Wendell’s journey, but the impact of two visionaries who built what Jiu Jitsu is today. Together, Dedé Pederneiras () and Wendell Alexander turned Nova União into a global force, shaping generations of athletes and redefining leadership in martial arts.

And to make this day even more special, Atama was chosen to create the official Gi for the ceremony, a tribute worthy of this legacy.

A story of vision, respect, and evolution that continues to inspire the world of Jiu Jitsu.

Vinícius Cruz: Passion and the Carlson Gracie Legacy

When it comes to loyalty, technique and true love for Jiu Jitsu, few names carry as much weight and respect as Vinícius Cruz. A proud black belt under the legendary Master Carlson Gracie, Vinícius represents a style that shaped generations, the pressure Jiu Jitsu built on grit, precision and heart.

With a career marked by major achievements, Vinícius became a World Champion in 1997 and Pan-American Champion in 1996, earning victories in some of the most iconic tournaments of his era. These titles helped write an important chapter in the history of our sport.

What stands out the most goes far beyond medals. Vinícius is a true ambassador of the Carlson Gracie legacy, a Jiu Jitsu that values respect, discipline and passion for the mat. As a teacher, he continues to share his knowledge and inspire new generations, spreading Carlson’s philosophy across the world.
