No part of the Guru Rinpoche’s image in picture is painted—every detail is created by stitching cloth onto cloth in an appliqué technique, whose end product is called ‘thongdrel’. Some are large enough to cover the face of a five- or six-storey building and take years to produce by dedicated teams of highly skilled artisans. No wonder they are displayed only once a year, on the final day of a locality’s annual festival in Bhutan.
