Most Bhutanese festivals are danced by monks. One is not. Every 13 December, high on Dochula Pass, the mask dances of Druk Wangyel Tshechu are performed by soldiers of the Royal Bhutan Army, framed by 108 chortens and the eastern Himalayas. Established in 2011 under the Queen Mother, it honours the Fourth King and the armed forces, and blends the spiritual heart of a tshechu with scenes from Bhutan’s own history.
