The Thimphu Lhamoi Drubchen is a festival that pays homage to Bhutan’s female protector diety, Palden Lhamo, who vowed to protect the dharma and is regarded as a tutelary diety of Tibetan buddhism.

The Drubchen was introduced by Kuenga Gyeltshen who was both a Je Khenpo (chief abbot) and Druk Desi (secular ruler) of Bhutan in 1705. He composed the dances after he had a vision of the fierce and wrathful Palden Lhamo appearing before him while he was meditating. Consequently, the dance ceremony was initiated to invoke the gurdian diety to bless, send good luck and drive away evil spirits.

The one day festival takes place three days prior to the Thimphu tshechu. This year, the Drubchen will be held in Tashicho Dzong on 9 September.

Thimphu Tshechu, held at Tashichhodzong, is one of the largest and most significant religious and social events in Bhutan. While the public enjoys the festival over three days, monks begin their preparations months in advance. On the night before the festival starts, prayers and rituals are performed to invoke the deity. Throughout the festival, various mask dances are showcased, including the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche) and Shaw Shachi (Dance of the Stags). It’s a great opportunity to experience Bhutanese culture and see locals dressed in their traditional gho and kira. This year, Thimphu Tshechu will take place from the 13th to the 15th of September.
