Yurung Tsho (Yurung Lake) is a beautiful freshwater lake located in Yurung Gewog, Pemagatshel District, in eastern Bhutan. Surrounded by lush broadleaf forests and rolling hills, the lake has long been a place of peace, meditation, and spiritual devotion for local communities. Today, it is one of the major natural attractions promoted by the Pemagatshel Dzongkhag for eco-tourism and nature-based travel.
Although there are no written records describing the exact origin of Yurung Tsho, local oral traditions say that the lake has been regarded as a sacred place for generations. Like many sacred lakes in Bhutan, it is believed to be protected by local guardian deities (Lha and Lu), and people visit the lake to offer prayers for good health, prosperity, rainfall, and peace. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by avoiding littering, loud noises, or disturbing the wildlife, reflecting Bhutanโs Buddhist values of harmony with nature.
One of the most distinctive features of Yurung Tsho is the presence of 1002 white chortens (stupas) surrounding the lake. These chortens were built over time by local devotees and community members as symbols of faith and compassion. Walking around the lake while passing these chortens is considered a meritorious act by many pilgrims.
Yurung Tsho is valued not only for its natural beauty but also as a place where spirituality and nature coexist. The calm waters, surrounding forests, colorful prayer flags, and white stupas make it a peaceful destination for pilgrims, photographers, hikers, and visitors seeking tranquility. The lake remains one of Pemagatshelโs hidden gems, reflecting Bhutanโs commitment to preserving both its natural environment and its rich Buddhist heritage.
