The Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang (meaning "the palace of great happiness or bliss"is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan. Constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, in 1637–38,it is the second oldest and second-largest dzong in Bhutan and one of its most majestic structures.The dzong houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Rangjung Kharsapani and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tertön Pema Lingpa. Punakha Dzong was the administrative center and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955 when the capital was moved to Thimphu.It is listed as a tentative site in Bhutan's Tentative List for UNESCO inclusion

Black-necked cranes in Bhutan (Grus nigricollis) are winter visitors during late October to mid February to the Phobjikha Valley as well as Ladakh, India, and Arunachal Pradesh, India. They arrive from the Tibetan Plateau, where they breed in the summer. They visit the Phobjikha Valley in large numbers, which is a declared protected area for the cranes, and also to other valleys in smaller numbers in central and eastern Bhutan.
On arrival in Phobhjikha they are seen to circle Gangteng Monastery three times as if practicing kora ("circumambulation"), and repeat this act as they begin their return to the Tibet Autonomous Region in early spring
A black-necked crane festival is held every year in the premises of the Gangteng Monastery on 11 November to welcome the cranes, which start arriving in late October. The festival is attended by a large number of local people. On this occasion, children wearing crane costumes perform choreographed crane dances. During this period, cranes are seen flying at high altitudes over the mountains.

Festivals are a significant part of Bhutan's culture and are central to the living Buddhist faith in the kingdom. Most festivals, also known as 'tsechus', are of great religious significance and are mostly celebrated through music and ritual masked dances called 'chams'. Tsechus attract large numbers of Bhutanese people, dressed in their finery, as they believe by attending these special celebrations they gain religious merit as well as enjoying a fine social event.

If Bhutan wears the crown for caring for the environment, then Phobjikha Valley is the jewel in that crown. Phobjikha Valley is one of the largest, high-altitude wetlands in Bhutan, situated on the western slopes of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. Wetlands are one of the most extraordinary ecosystems in the world, due to their ability to store and slowly release water and as such they are a lifeline for biodiversity. However, like many other wetlands, Phobjikha has experienced rapid change in the last few years due to expanding development, social transformation, and modernization. This includes changes to the wetlands – an area crucial for the survival of the stately Black-Necked Crane.
Each winter the people of Phobjikha Valley eagerly await the return of Black-Necked Cranes. These majestic birds migrate from their breeding grounds in the upper Tibetan Plateau to this remote valley in the Himalaya and roost there until spring amid the alpine wetlands. It is believed that the first birds, which tend to arrive in late October, circle the magnificent 17th-century Gangtey Gompa monastery, three times before descending below to the wetlands to settle in for winter. This act is deeply embedded in Bhutanese folklore and is considered a great blessing for the valley, winged with hope, peace and prosperity. For visitors, it is a chance to see an incredibly rare bird up close in a pristine, natural environment where it is loved and treasured.
