The National Assembly (NA) has decided through a majority vote that the government should not provide airfare subsidies. The government had allocated Nu 49.5 million just for the fiscal year 2025-26 for that purpose. The amount is big.

The government's rationale behind proposing the subsidy is that plane tickets charged by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines are high and that lowering the ticket prices by giving subsidies can attract more tourists.

The NA's decision to discontinue the airfare subsidy will be reviewed by NC and the upper house may have their own say on it. The final decision yet to be taken.
