Bhutan had no motor roads until the 1960s.

For centuries people crossed the Himalayas using narrow mountain trails, traveling by foot, horse, and mule.

Everything changed in 1961, when Bhutan began building its first roads with the help of Project Dantak.

Today the country has a growing road network β€” but many of those roads still follow the same paths used by traders and monks hundreds of years ago.

A fascinating transformation in just a few decades.
