Spotting a big herd of buffalo in the bush is always a special moment, but for a birder, it can be even more rewarding.
As buffalo move through the grass, they kick up dust and disturb insects hiding in the vegetation. This creates a feeding opportunity for many birds, which quickly fly in to catch the insects exposed by the movement of the herd.
It is a beautiful reminder that nature is deeply connected. One species’ movement can create life and opportunity for another. In the bush, coexistence is not just a word, it is something you can see happening right in front of you.
Buffalo may steal the scene, but for a keen birder, the birds following behind often tell an even bigger story.
