SPOTLIGHT ON: DROTSKY’S CABINS
Drotsky's Cabins are situated on the banks of the Okavango panhandle. They are located 8km south of the radio mast in Shakawe, after a left turn off the tar road and on to a sandy track leading eastwards. Crossing the old road up the panhandle, Drotsky's Cabins are a further 3km on. (The drive across can be negotiated by 2WD vehicle, but as the sand is very thick in places a 4WD vehicle is recommended).
This long-established camp has been run by the ever helpful Jan and Eileen Drotsky and their family, who have seen the Shakawe area change from a remote outpost to a thriving little town.
Drotsky's Cabins stands on a high bank, overlooking the river. It's excellent for birdwatching or fishing, though there's little game around except for hippos and crocodiles.
Drotsky's six chalets are set amongst well-watered lawns in a shaded haven under a canopy of thick riverside trees. Colourful shrubs and banana trees have been planted between them. Two of the chalets sleep two people, whilst the other three are bigger and built on two levels, and so can sleep four. All are A-frame design with low brick sidewalls supporting a tall, steeply angled thatched roof. These are insect-proofed with mesh on the window and lit by mains electricity. They all have simple furnishings, rugs on the floor, and a tabletop electric fan.
Central to the lodge is a bar and a very large dining area, built over the river.
Drotsky's Cabins are in the perfect location to launch your Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve Safari. It is also the ideal base if you're driving on the west side of the Delta and heading north to Namibia and in particular Mahango National Park, Bwabwata National Park and the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi).
Between August and October Drotsky’s Cabins is the place to be to witness the Barbel Run: the fish congregate in their thousands, swim upstream and slap their tails through the thick papyrus reeds in the river. The slapping noise apparently disorientates the smaller fish species in the river and they become the barbel’s next meal. The commotion attracts the attention of birds but also of tiger fish - so if you’re an avid tiger fish angler, Drotsky’s Cabins is the place for you.
