A brand new adventure! This time, I visited part of western Latvia with Peter.

We ventured out to where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga, and we visited a little ship graveyard. I can "sea" why people love the coast!

We also discovered the Jurtaka hiking trail and plan to do part of that in the future!

It is with a heavy heart I share a memorial tribute to acknowledge and honour the lives lost in the terrible rock slide yesterday on the Bow Glacier trail in Banff.

My heart goes out to all who are affected by this event.

The mountains are truly beautiful, but they are also powerful and unpredictable. We do all we can to mitigate risks, and this is a humbling reminder that we are still at the mercy of the world around us.

This loss hits a little harder... Those who were lost included people who were part of my foundational hiking group, Slow and Steady Hikers. The shock and sorrow of losing part of our community is hard to describe, but I am also in awe of that same community at this time.

Outdoor enthusiasts might have a few things we like to bicker about, but we all share passion for the natural world and our sport of choice. I'm proud to be part of this community, and I take heart in the outpouring of compassion and support shared amongst us.

I was so startled by one of these little guys last summer at Miquelon PP that I actually screamed a little! πŸ˜‚ Did you know there are three species of garter snake in Alberta? We have plains, red-sided, and wandering garter snakes!

Garter snakes might be small, but they’re social! In cooler months, they hibernate together in large groups - sometimes hundreds strong. They’re harmless, helpful and love eating pests like slugs and mice. If you see these social creatures sunbathing on a trail, give them space and a nod of thanks 🐍

I've certainly been branching out into the realm of solo hiking lately, but there's no doubt I feel a bit safer and have an amazing time when I hike with friends. I could hike the same trail three times, and get three different experiences depending on who might be with me!

Peter is my endlessly supportive other half. I'm sure he didn't quite realize what he was getting into when he decided to start dating a nutty hiking lady. His passion for photography makes our hikes extra fun because we get to pause and really appreciate everything on trail.

Enn teaches me new things about the outdoors, and is such a lovely human being! She never says no to a new trail or adventure if she can help it, and frankly, she's just a ray of sunshine.

And of course, there's my original crew of hiking buddies who taught me, and also learned alongside me!

Hiking with you all makes the journey one thousand times better!

Someone throws garbage on your lawn. How does that make you feel?

When we go out to enjoy beautiful outdoor spaces, finding someone else's trash creates the same feeling. Especially plastic bottles and bags.

As outdoor enthusiasts, we can take action with environmentally-friendly plastic alternatives.

When you pack for a trip, opt for reusable bags as much as possible for things like snacks, and if you find yourself buying a lot of bottled water, make a one-time small investment in a reusable bottle or a water bladder. At home, try beeswax wrappers instead of cling film.

Even a small action can make a big difference. If we focus on keeping a clean planet, we can enjoy its beauty for years to come.

The weekend was a busy one with a very successful car camp and hiking trip! I was able to kick off my first mountain hikes of the year with a jaunt up Tunnel Mountain, and then got into the grind with Sulphur Mountain the following day. Finished it all off with a classic Beaver Tail

I had lots of insights during this trip which I intend to write about when I have a chance! For now, please enjoy the photos!

Wildflower season is one of my favorites! This past weekend, I found some Bog Violets, Fairy Slippers, and even a few Prairie Crocuses!

Hiking hack: Stopping for flower photos helps disguise that you might be fighting for your life while climbing some seriously steep switchbacks πŸ₯΅πŸ˜‚

Spent a good chunk of the day prepping for my first car camping trip of the year! I was so excited that I booked it all the way back in February!

Today's project: assembling meals!

Even though I'm car camping, I only have a little car. I tend to stick to packing with a bit of minimalism in mind and rely on lots of my backpacking gear to save space.

This trip, I'll be testing out my new MSR Whisperlite Universal stove! I have a few cannisters to use up, so I have it set up for that. We'll see how it goes!

I love your book, and this beef barley stew is πŸ‘Œ
