June 28, 2025 : The Dungeon is a collased sea cave that has two natural archways leading out to sea. The unique formation is recognized as a UNESCO Geopark.

June 23, 2025 : We couldn’t resist stopping at the airport made famous by Operation Yellow Ribbon and the musical “Come From Away” when we drove by Gander, NL. There’s an exhibit of the airport’s history up to and including the musical. The 1959 terminal’s International Lounge is also a prime example of mid-century modernism, from the time when planes had to refuel when traveling between North America and Europe.

June 22, 2025 : Our first glimpses of Newfoundland while arriving by ferry in Port aux Basques.

June 22, 2025 : Departing Nova Scotia and heading toward Newfoundland on Marine Atlantic’s MV Highlanders ferry. The approximately 177km (110mi) crossing between North Sydney, NS and Port aux Basques, NL took about six hours. Our rental car rode down below with the vehicles and semis, while we reserved seats on the top deck lounge.

June 21, 2025 : The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic contains over 30,000 artifacts on the history of all things sea- and boat-related in Atlantic Canada. There are also special exhibits dedicated to the Halifax Explosion and the sinking of the Titanic. Pic 2 is a piece of the exploded Mont Blanc, pic 3 is a piece of woodwork from the Titanic’s first class lounge.

June 21, 2025 : Touring the underground munitions tunnels at Fort Charlotte on George’s Island. The fort was used for defense right up through World War II, and then became a National Historic Site in 1965.

June 21, 2025 : We took a quick ferry ride from the Halifax waterfront to George’s Island, location of the former Fort Charlotte, another line of defense for Halifax Harbour.
