Have you ever wandered in a city with no destination in mind and gotten lost? I remember the first time this happened to me. January 1983 - London England - my first overseas trip. I landed, dropped luggage at the hotel, and went out and wandered for hours. Had no idea where I was. I was mesmerized by the architecture and the homes, and the quaint streets, pubs, and people...All I had was the hotel address so when I got in a Taxi I could get back. I still remember so much of this lost wandering.

Every new country you visit is like starting a conversation with someone you’ve never met.

At first, everything feels unfamiliar. The language. The food. The customs. The rhythm of everyday life.

Then you start listening, observing and understanding.

And just like a good conversation, you often leave knowing a little more about the world — and perhaps a little more about yourself.

Travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s about getting to know them.

You absolutely can book your own travel.

So why use a travel advisor?

Because clicking “Book Now” is the easy part.

Choosing the right cruise, resort, itinerary or experience is where things get more complicated.

Is that lower price really a better deal? Is that cruise line right for you? Is the connection long enough? What does the fine print actually mean? Is there something about the trip you haven’t considered?

Sometimes my job is helping you choose what to book.

Sometimes it’s telling you what I wouldn’t book.

Right now it is about informing you and monitoring the ETA, EES, and ETIAS for the UK, European Union, and Schengen countries.

That’s the part of being a travel advisor that I think matters most.

You’re not hiring me because you can’t book travel yourself.

You’re working with me because you want to make better travel decisions.

This month, TravelOnly’s Annual Conference is heading to sea aboard Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady.

I’m particularly excited about this one.

Our annual conference is packed with learning, motivation, and everything that we need to build a strong travel business.

The TravelOnly annual conferences are a BIG part of my success. The Travel Partners that I have met at TravelOnly annual conferences have become great partners and also friends.

These are the folks that make what I do possible.

Virgin Voyages has created a very different take on cruising, and I’m looking forward to experiencing the food, entertainment, atmosphere and that much-talked-about Virgin vibe for myself.

After all, there’s no substitute for firsthand experience when you’re advising clients about travel.

You know me for my cruise experience, and Virgin Voyages has been a gap in my knowledge for too long. Resilient Lady, and Virgin Voyages here we come!

Oh, and you can expect me to promote Virgin a bit when I am back….!

The older I get, the less interested I am in famous places.

I'm far more interested in ordinary ones.

* A neighbourhood bakery.
* A local market.
* A family restaurant that's been there for forty years.
* A park where nothing special is happening.

Don't get me wrong. I still want to see the great landmarks. But increasingly, they're not the moments I remember most when I come home.

It's the conversations, the meals, the people and those completely unplanned moments when, for a little while, you feel less like a tourist and more like you're simply there.

Because that's where you stop watching a country, a city, or a landmark... And start experiencing it.

50+ countries travelled and this is my more recent realization.

One thing travel cured me of...

Thinking everywhere should work like home.

Sometimes the train is late.

Sometimes dinner takes two hours.

Sometimes the store closes in the middle of the afternoon.

At first, those things can feel frustrating, bu eventually you realize...

You're the visitor.

The country isn't doing it wrong. It's simply doing it differently.

That's when travel becomes less about changing the place, and more about changing you.

These are some of the things that I have learned after travelling to more than 50 countries...

After travelling to more than 50 countries, I've noticed something... The best souvenirs never fit in a suitcase.

I honestly don't remember most of what I bought, if I bought anything that I brought home.

But I do remember...

The grandmother in Portugal who corrected my terrible pronunciation with a laugh and a kind smile.

The little café where they brought me something I never ordered because they thought I'd like it.

The stranger who gave up his seat on a train in Japan.

Years later...

The souvenirs are gone, but the memories and the stories remain.

Maybe that's why memories and experiences are worth more than merchandise.

After travelling to more than 50 countries, I've noticed something...

I've never met anyone who regretted taking the trip.

I've met plenty of people who regretted not taking it.

They tell you about the cruise they almost booked. The country they always wanted to visit. The retirement trip that somehow never happened.

Life has a way of convincing us there will always be another year.

Sometimes there is. Sometimes there isn't.

I've heard far more stories that begin with... "I wish we had gone."
..than stories that begin with... "I wish we hadn't."

Travel isn't always about spending money.

Sometimes it's about refusing to let time quietly make the decision for you.

Travel while you can.
