I’ve been to most of the popular spots in Italy and this tiny island off the coast of Naples is the one I can’t stop thinking about.

Ischia has thermal spas, medieval castles, crystal-clear water, and the best gelato I’ve had in my life, and it costs almost half of what I paid in Positano. No rental car, no crowds, no complicated logistics.

Just a one-hour ferry from Naples and you’re there. This is where Italians go when they want to get away, and once you’ve been, you’ll understand why. I would pick Ischia over Positano time and time again.

I solo’d Victoria, Canada for a long weekend at 50. No car, no plan, no tour group. Flights and hotel from Calgary? $400 U.S. for the entire weekend. Harbour ferries, ghost tours, the best salmon chowder of my life, and afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress.

Save this for your trip.

I soloed a 9-day mobile safari in Botswana at 50 for $4,700 USD. No electricity. No running water. Just lions outside my tent. June–October is the best time to go.

I’ve been to all 12 Disney parks. Here’s how I rank them, and my number 1 might surprise you. 🏰 Which park is your favourite? 👇

Forget the Amalfi Coast. Go to Malta instead. And I say this as someone who thinks the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

I spent a week in Malta and had entire stretches of beach to myself. I ate pastizzi for two bucks, had seafood fresh off the boat in Marsaxlokk, and stayed in a sea view apartment with flights for about $1,100 USD.

Everything I recommend is linked: accommodations, tours, all of it. And if the Amalfi Coast is still calling you, I’ve got that linked too.

I spent 72 hours in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and it was one of the best stops I’ve ever made. I stayed at the Palm River Hotel, took a helicopter over the falls and got upgraded to the front seat for free, watched giraffes from a sunset boat ride on the Zambezi, and rode the Bamba Tram across the bridge to Zambia at sunrise with hot cocoa and biscuits.

If you’re planning a trip to southern Africa, this is the perfect place to start or end it. Save this. More in my bio.

I solo’d Québec City for 72 hours at 50: no checked bag, no car, and no tour group. Three nights for less than $175, afternoon tea at the Château Frontenac, and a ghost tour after dark. This city completely surprised me. Save this for your trip. More in my bio.

I solo’d Osaka at 50 — one day, no guide, and no Japanese. Here’s exactly how I spent 24 hours.

I ate cheese bread that cost ¥500 and had no business being that good. I watched Dotonbori wake up with nobody in it and then came back at night when the neon took over. Somewhere in between there were soufflé pancakes, a river cruise, and takoyaki served so hot it nearly burned my face off.

I did the Amalfi Coast in midlife. No tour bus, no schedule, no rush. The apartment had a terrace that overlooked everything, and most days that’s exactly where the time went.

One afternoon involved a ferry to Amalfi Town for The Lemon Experience, a family-run lemon farm with limoncello tastings and lemon pound cake. That was the big excursion. That’s it.
