Foothills Acreage: Refined Rustic

Set against the natural beauty of the foothills just outside Calgary, this home was envisioned as a warm retreat for a busy family looking to escape the pace of city life. Our team guided the project from concept through completion, overseeing the build, finish selections, and the final furnishing and styling to ensure a cohesive design throughout.

Rustic at its roots, but approached through a refined and modern lens. A palette of warm browns, soft neutrals, rustic metals, and layered textures creates a sense of calm, while natural stone anchors the kitchen with warmth and organic movement. Wood detailing and tactile finishes carry that materiality through every room, and the primary ensuite continues the narrative as a serene, spa-like escape.

A curated mix of furniture, artwork, and accessories adds personality and a collected-over-time feel. The result is a home that is both timeless and lived-in, blending rustic warmth with modern refinement.

Mountain Modern Retreat: An Elevated Canmore Escape

Nestled in the heart of Canmore, this retreat was designed as a warm escape from city life - a place to slow down, gather with family, and take in the mountain landscape. The newly built condo offered a clean architectural foundation; our goal was to make it feel layered, personal, and reflective of how the clients live and entertain.

With limited structural customization at build phase, we focused on character through bespoke millwork. In the dining area, a custom banquette creates an intimate spot for family dinners, game nights, or morning coffee with a view. A multifunctional office with built-in storage transitions seamlessly between workspace and guest retreat.

Throughout, warm woods, rich textiles, earthy tones, wallpaper, and curated artwork bring quiet luxury, while vintage-inspired details and sculptural accents add soul. The palette stays grounded and organic to echo the landscape beyond.

The result: a sophisticated mountain getaway — elevated, effortless, and designed for connection.

Wet Bars. One of our favourite design moments in any home.

Whether dramatic and moody or clean and understated, a well-designed wet bar adds both function and personality to a space. A place to entertain, to gather, and to showcase some of our most considered design choices.

From dark herringbone tile and natural stone to warm oak shelving and built-in wine storage—these are the details that make a home truly complete.

Kitchens.

The space everyone gathers in, whether you planned for it or not. It has to function first — but the details are what make it feel like the heart of the home.

From white oak cabinetry and full-slab marble to plaster hoods, herringbone floors, glass-front uppers, and brass that only gets better with age, no two are ever the same. Each one is designed around how the family actually cooks, hosts, and lives.

AVD Travels: Tanzania. This one feels a little closer to home.

Returning to Tanzania, Aly’s home country, meant reconnecting with a place filled with so much colour, pattern, craft and creativity — and, of course, no trip would be complete without exploring the local markets.

From hand-carved objects and intricate beadwork to textiles, art and unexpected little treasures, there is inspiration everywhere you look. These are the kinds of places Aly loves most — wandering, discovering and finding pieces that carry a sense of place and a story of their own.

Travel has always played an important role in how we see and experience design at AVD, but there’s something particularly special about finding inspiration in a place that is part of your own story.

AVD Travels: Guadalajara One of our favourite parts of travelling is getting a behind-the-scenes look at how things are made — and our visit to LOFA Ceramics in Guadalajara was exactly that.

At LOFA, every tile is made by hand, one piece at a time, using high-temperature ceramic and beautiful natural glazes created in their own workshop from oxides and minerals. The result is incredible depth of colour, texture and subtle variation, giving each piece its own character.

Getting to step inside the workshop and see the process firsthand gave us an even greater appreciation for the craftsmanship behind these tiles. It’s this human touch — the slight imperfections, variations and evidence of the maker — that we’re always drawn to at AVD.

Another inspiring stop on our travels through Mexico and a reminder of just how much incredible design and craftsmanship there is to discover here.

AVD Travels: CDMX. It’s no secret that we have a love affair with Mexico City — and no trip is complete without wandering through its incredible markets.

For Aly, it’s all about the thrill of the hunt: discovering one-of-a-kind pieces, vintage treasures, handmade objects and those unexpected finds that you simply can’t source anywhere else. It’s often these pieces — the ones with a story, a little patina and plenty of personality — that bring a space to life.

Another reason CDMX continues to inspire us, time and time again.

AVD Travels: CDMX. In Mexico City, we stepped into a world where light becomes architecture.

davidpompa’s showroom reads like a gallery — sculptural forms suspended with precision, each fixture exploring materiality, proportion, and shadow. Rooted in locally sourced materials and artisanal processes, the collection speaks to a quiet confidence — refined yet powerful.

This is lighting that anchors a space. That creates mood. That tells a story before a single word is spoken.
An inspiring reminder that the most impactful design is both intentional and deeply connected to place.

AVD Travels: CDMX. Behind an unassuming façade in Mexico City, Pērch | Muebles has transformed a residential condo into a layered and intimate showroom experience.

Design and manufacturing live under one roof — resulting in furniture that feels considered, honest, and beautifully made. Clean lines, generous proportions, and a level of customization that allows each piece to adapt seamlessly to its environment.

There’s something powerful about meeting the founders, hearing the process, and seeing craftsmanship up close. It reinforces what we value most — thoughtful production, strong point of view, and design with integrity.

Sourcing with intention always leads to the best stories.
