Equal by Design

Equal by Design Equal by Design is a social enterprise and multi-modal design practice founded on the shared belief in design’s responsibility to function as advocacy.

Established in 2016 by Alison Grittner and Jessica Cullen, Equal by Design is a multimodal design practice whose fundamental tenet is the belief in design’s capacity to function as advocacy. Through design we endeavour to provide access and opportunity to a level field of play, be it through a renovation that adapts a home to meet an individual's unique physical abilities, or the design of a platf

orm through which underrepresented groups in the design and construction field can increase exposure to clients and economies. Although we’ve trained as architects, we maintain that the “design thinking”* skills developed in our architectural education combined with diverse real world experiences effectively transcend disciplinary boundaries. Therefore, we actively enhance our practice through research and development including but not limited to the built form. Equal by Design’s services include design for aging in place, universal/adaptable/barrier-free design for persons with disabilities (commercial, residential, new-build and renovations), full-service residential design, as well as research and advocacy.
