Thank goodness…this will put alot of travellers minds at ease
Within one minute of the press conference on the Air Canada flight attendant strike, Canada’s Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu announced she is “ordering parties to resume negotiations.”
Ordering binding arbitration puts an end to a strike by Air Canada’s flight attendants that has grounded flights and disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of travellers in Canada and overseas.
The Minister is invoking section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, forcing parties to work with the Canadian Industrial Labour Board. Section 107 means flight attendants are also forced to report to work.
When asked why the government is only now invoking Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, Minister Hajdu said: “What changed from yesterday and today is that last night I asked the parties to meet with me at the same meeting. We talked through what was remaining from the perspective of the parties. The talks continued throughout the night and the talks broke down. Clearly they need help with an arbitrator.”
