Open letter to Mayor Cathy Miller...
Dear Mayor Cathy and Councillors,
My name is Paul Rojas, owner of the property located at 69 East Shore Road, also known as Dreamcatcher Lake House.
I want to begin by sincerely thanking the administration for broadcasting the recent Council meeting via Zoom. Providing public access to these meetings demonstrates a strong commitment to transparency and inclusion. This kind of openness gives all residents and taxpayers, seasonal and year-round alike, a voice in local governance.
That said, I respectfully encourage Council to continue this approach year-round. Meetings held in the off-season, without a remote access option, can unintentionally give the impression that decisions are made without broad community input. I trust thatβs not the intention, and I believe consistent public access would reinforce confidence in the decision-making process.
As a short-term rental operator and member of the Pelee Responsible Family Cottage Owners STR Association (PRFCOSTRA), I ask Council to consider working in partnership with our association. PRFCOSTRA is a non-profit group representing property owners who engage in responsible, family-oriented STR operations on the island. The association advocates for self-regulation, encourages communication, and aims to create solutions that serve the wider Pelee Island community.
I understand that leadership means making difficult decisions, and I respect the strong stance this Council, and especially Mayor Cathy, has taken on many issues. However, when it comes to STR regulations, I believe the best path forward is not to rush, but to collaborate. Opening a negotiation table where the municipality and stakeholders can work together would allow us to build thoughtful, effective policies that benefit everyone, not just a few.
Thank you for your time and continued dedication to the future of Pelee Island.
Warm regards,
Paul Rojas
