Despite being challenged by a historic storm that brought torrential rain and powerful winds, the Canadian Rockies birding tour delivered exceptional birding, wildlife viewing, and camaraderie. Participants enjoyed memorable sightings of specialty birds including American Dipper, Harlequin Duck, White-faced Ibis, Prairie Falcon, Calliope Hummingbird, Cassin’s Finch, and a stunning slate-colored Fox Sparrow, while also encountering a remarkable variety of mammals such as Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Moose, Elk, and Bison. Our Canadian Rockies: Waterton Lakes tour concluded with a visit to the culturally significant Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump.

The Alberta Birds and Dinosaurs tour combined outstanding birding with the dramatic landscapes and paleontological history of Alberta’s badlands. Highlights included excellent views of wetland specialties around the Irricana sloughs, prairie birds such as Ferruginous Hawk, Long-billed Curlew, Chestnut-collared Longspur, and an unexpected influx of Lark Buntings, along with memorable wildlife encounters including Pronghorns, Coyotes, an American Badger, and a Prairie Rattlesnake. Participants explored iconic sites such as Horsethief Canyon, Dinosaur Provincial Park, and the Royal Tyrrell Museum, where a special behind-the-scenes curator tour added a unique perspective on the region’s prehistoric past.

The spring migration tour of Texas was, as always, a huge hit for everyone involved. We began our travels at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, traveling up into the very scenic and juniper-clad hills of the Edward’s Plateau, then transferred to the upper Texas coast, to work the migrant trap oak mottes and coastal beaches and salt marshes before finishing up in the Texas Pineywoods north of Houston. This route made for some delightful and diverse birding and we recorded 247 species of birds as a group, with highlights such as Limpkin, Short-tailed Hawk, Ruff, Swainson’s Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, Green Jay & Tropical Parula. 28 Species of warbler was one of our highest in a few years and we were lucky to catch a very good fallout of songbirds on our first day in High Island.

Beyond the exceptional wildlife, the trip offered a rich cultural experience through visits to historic towns such as Ronda, Tarifa, Cáceres, Toledo, and El Rocío. Participants enjoyed traditional Spanish cuisine, local cheeses, flamenco performances, and authentic rural hospitality while traveling through olive groves, white villages, marshes, and mountain landscapes. Despite some challenging weather, the tour was marked by outstanding birdwatching, close wildlife encounters, and a deep appreciation of Spain’s natural heritage, culture, and traditions.

Our inaugural Quebec in Spring: Gaspé Peninsula tour showcased the remarkable birding in eastern Quebec. We explored a diverse range of habitats, from the marshes and estuaries of the lower St. Lawrence to the rugged coasts, boreal forests, and mountain valleys of the Gaspé Peninsula. Highlights included observing thousands of nesting gannets on Bonaventure Island, to exploring iconic locations such as Forillon National Park and Percé, as well as witnessing reverse migration during a cold front and participating in bird banding demonstrations.

Our England Birds & Gardens tour visited some of the best birding sites and formal gardens of eastern England was an absolute delight. Of the latter, Beth Chatto’s Gardens were a big hit, along with the contrasting Barnsdale, Fairhaven and the world-renowned Kew; while among the avian highlights were stellar views of specialities such as Dartford Warbler, Bearded Reedling and Eurasian Spoonbill. There were also a few unexpected bonus birds along the way, and that long-standing favourite of gardeners, locals and overseas birders alike, European Robin. On top of those headlines, we also enjoyed the picture-perfect villages tucked away in this part of England and country pubs.

Seventeen days, seven lodges, and a transect that carried us from the dry inter-Andean valley of Puembo up to the páramo above Papallacta, across the Chocó cloud forest of the western slope, over the eastern Andes, and down through the foothill forests of Sumaco into the deep Amazon at Sani. Our Grand Ecuador Birding Tour recorded 556 species of birds — a total that reflects not just Ecuador’s astonishing diversity, but also the patience, sharp eyes, and camaraderie of a group that pulled together every single day.

This was a wonderful journey right across the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, From pristine forests to the more human-influenced landscapes, we experienced some of the best birds of the east Himalaya. 351 species of bird, and 19 mammals, were seen. Among the many highlights mentioned by our group of travellers included Rufous-necked Hornbill, the critically endangered White-bellied Heron Tawny Fish Owl, Satyr Tragopan, Ward’s Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, and Fire-tailed Myzornis, alongside more widespread (but no less stunning) birds like Ibisbill, Slaty-backed Forktail, and Long-tailed Broadbill.

Among the mammals, highlights included the beautiful and range-restricted Golden Langur, Bhutan Giant Flying Squirrel, and Siberian Weasel. As if that wildlife wasn’t enough, it was invariably encountered among spectacular scenery, often with a backdrop of blooming magnolias and rhododendrons.

This tour is made even more special, though, by the human element of Bhutan. The ever-friendly people, the culture – including the temples we are lucky enough to visit, and the food of a unique country cannot be overlooked, as great as the birding is.
