When taking the ferry from the mainland to and from Island you may get lucky with sightings of marine wildlife, most of which are too far away to capture on camera! I was fortunate enough to capture this whale sighting on my iPhone. I never take these sightings for granted!

The final afternoon of train travel from Moab to Salt Lake City by Rocky Mountaineer train (Canyon Spirit) took us through a striking transition of landscapes that reflect Utah's diverse geography. From towering red rock formations to rugged, dry desert with sparse vegetation to lush wide basins and valleys. This was a historic departure - a first for Rocky Mountaineer, and we enjoyed every moment. We were spoiled by the onboard attentive hosts throughout and enjoyed their very entertaining occasional commentary and story telling - the balance was just right. We checked into the luxurious Grand America hotel in Salt Lake City in the early evening before departing early for our flight back to Canada. Our regret was that we didn’t spend more time in Salt Lake City at the end. We’ll definitely be back to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding this welcoming city. Reach out to us for more information and to book this fabulous adventure!

On day three of our Denver to Salt Lake City train journey on board the new Canyon Spirit train (Rocky Mountaineer), before we departed Moab, we took a sightseeing tour to Arches National Park. This park certainly didn’t disappoint and is worth all the hype. The timing worked well with our early afternoon Rocky Mountain train departure.

When we disembarked the train near Moab, an air conditioned tour bus and a friendly driver guide were ready to take us to Canyonlands National Park before dropping us off at the hotel around 6:30pm. We even managed to sneak in a 2 hour mountain bike ride in the evening before it got dark. The photos speak for themselves - jaw dropping scenery without the crowds you may experience at the Grand Canyon. Taking a tour right after the train is a good way to maximize your time before checking into your Moab hotel.

Day two onboard the Canyon Spirit train (Rocky Mountaineer) from Glenwood Springs to Moab is a half day train journey which leaves time to take a separate bus tour out of Moab in the afternoon. We opted to take a Canyonlands National Park tour right after we disembarked the train (see our next post). Our luggage was waiting for us in our hotel room in Moab. Contrasting scenery, amazing onboard service and fantastic food as we leisurely made our way to Moab. Spending time in the lounge (applies to premier upgrade / SIlverLeaf PLUS service only) allowed us to socialize and spread out - definitely worth the upgrade cost to access this lounge. Refreshments were on hand in the lounge or at your seat - nothing was too much trouble for the onboard attendants.

An amazing day onboard the Rocky Mountaineer train today from Denver to the very friendly resort city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. I have to say I have been very impressed so far. With the lounge included with SilverLeaf PLUS service (“Premier Upgrade” in 2026) there is more opportunity to spread out, socialize and enjoy a cocktail or two while taking in the views. We’re overnighting in the wonderful historic Hotel Maxwell Anderson (formally Hotel Denver). The rich history of this hotel dates back to the early 20th century. Dinner at the Glenwood Canyon Brewpub topped off a perfect day! Tomorrow a half day train journey will take us to Moab where we will disembark and take a bus tour to Canyonlands, one of Utah's famous National Parks.

Walking to the polling station this morning to vote and it looked like the local painted turtles were lining up to vote too! We love our country so much. Calling all Canadians 🇨🇦 - get out and VOTE!

As the bears awaken in the spring, they head into the valley bottoms to forage for food due to the snow at the higher elevations. This is why there are greater chances of sightings in the springtime, as the humans like the valley bottoms too to get around!

Bears are out! 🐻
Spring brings important changes to the landscape and to wildlife behaviour in the park, particularly around the Jasper townsite. Bears have started to emerge from their dens. A black bear and cubs were spotted in the valley bottom, and more bears are expected to awaken soon.

It’s time to brush up on wildlife safety tips, add bear spray back into your adventure kit and be ready to encounter wildlife throughout the park and beside roadways.
