We’ve been lucky the last couple of years to have my Brother Coltan helping us out in camp. He’s been a great asset to the team and makes running camp stress free for both Dad and I. From cooking, to skinning, to entertaining with his guitar and fixing whatever breaks. It’s been great to see him go out and kill a great buck now 2 years in a row only days after ours guests leave. From killing to cooking, we greatly enjoy time spent doing our thing together. Thanks again mate, now the kill story from the man himself -

“Well I started the season cooking for moose mountain outfitters. So, my hunt hadn’t begun yet when this buck walked out and stood broadside, 30 yards in front of me on the road into camp. Could have taken him and was upset that I didn’t. But second day of my hunt about 10 days after I seen him I was sitting in a blind around 1pm and in the distance I could see movement deep in the bush. So I grunted using my extinguisher to bring it closer to me. Eventually I surmised it was a dry doe. Which I said I would kill to fill me freezer but I didn’t have a shot as she was in thick bush. I figured there would be a buck on her tail anyway. So I kept grunting and drew her closer to me. I then seen this guys antlers poking above the hazel brush for a quick second. Then, I lost site of him again. It took a few minutes until I could see him behind the brush a bit more clearly, but still had no shot. I then seen the doe clearly for a second and figured that was going to be my shot when he passed through the same spot following her trail. The moment came and he was on the move, but I ended up getting a shot off. I could see he was hit and he walked about 25 yards and died behind some trees. Then a buck a year younger came through took his place in line behind the doe. Soon after, he was followed by a buck one year even younger. It’s very cool to see how white-tails breeding rights are in the flesh. Had such a great hunt and glad I got a second chance at this buck.
Thank you to my Dad and Brother for the good times at moose mountain outfitters”

Well after seeing a 8-10 bulls around this size, maybe a year or 2 older at most. Strat was content taking down a perfect eating bull as he had just taken a trophy whitetail the day before. The main challenge hunting bulls out of the rut is relying heavily on the weather. With no snow and warm temperatures, the bigger bulls present less opportunity to track them down and find them. But none the less, if you continue to log hours in the bush. Opportunity will eventually collide with you if you continue to put in the time. It was a great way to send them off, with a cooler full of Canadian moose meat!

So many words can be said about what went down the 6 morning or these guys hunt. But leaving camp that morning, we couldn’t have prepared any more for what we found. We had taken a quad ride just before shooting light to get back into a spot to hunt moose. With the weather temps being in the pluses and having some wind. It was ideal conditions to going up into this particular spot to try and find a bull.

At this time we had passed up several younger bulls and 120-130” whitetails, but nothing we wanted to knock down with time still left in there 8 day hunt. We were about a kilometre from the quads, walking a game trail that bordered muskeg when we came across this guy. I had made the decision to go east, instead of west into this spot. Not 75 yards from where we decided, I could see this guy chasing a doe up the trail towards us. I told Stratton it was a buck as I set the shooting sticks up. I I grunted, put my Bino’s up one last time as he set up and as I said he was wider than his ears.. Boom!

He had dropped the buck in his tracks, as I had stopped him a second time with the extinguisher deer grunt. But with it only being half hour after shooting light started and being down in some thick s**t. We had no idea what we knocked down through the trees. We just knew he was wide and had mass at his bases was all we could tell. We were in shock as we walked up to this true, deep woods Alberta Bush Buck! “He’s a fu***ng Toad man” was the first words that Stratton said, and I couldn’t agree more. Mass like I’ve never seen! A ten rivers buck for sure, congrats Stratton. You earned it with the amount of miles we put on in search of a proper buck and a bull moose and have earned the title, “The Founder of Toad Hallow.”

Well I gotta say, the Kraft party were willing to work for it this hunt! With zero complaints! We put in 100’s of kilometers with them on there hunt to track down a couple bulls in some tough, warm hunting conditions. There were a few opportunities at bulls leading up to this day. But either just not enough time or a smaller bull. Then, on the 4th day of their hunt, persistence combined with hours spent in the bush aligned Dad and Chris with this great bull. We had just finished quading over 25km before shooting light on this mild Alberta morning. To get over to one of our favourite moose hunting spots. We made a game plan and split up, not long after that they came upon this bull standing 125 yards up on a hillside. Dad got Chris set up in between cow calls to get him to stick around. Once he was set up, Chris made a perfect heart shot on the bull! He spun around, went 5 yards and dropped in his tracks. A great start to there first Canadian hunt ever, with moose mountain outfitters.

Tarzan The Meat Man strikes again! Jay’s hunted with us twice now, in those times killing 3 animals across 8 days. Due to a bit of Mother Nature getting in the way, this buck put us through the ringer…

Jay and I had made plans to sit a stand the 4th morning of his hunt in an area we had seen a decent buck on camera. We had been in stand for no more than half an hour when a dry doe had come sauntering through. During that time, I was blowing my extinguisher to get her to stick around. Within minutes of me doing so, I could hear crunching coming down the trail towards our stand. He must have seen us turn our heads. Because he locked up and watched us for what felt like an hour as we froze there. The buck started to move past us through the trees after the doe. I had stopped him again for a slight quartering away shot and Jay let fly. Both of us thought it was a good shot as the buck slowly passed over the hill and out of sight, with no other shot opportunity through the trees. So we gave him some time and then went to find him. To our surprise we found no blood out the gate. We searched for a good hour and with very minimal blood we called a couple people to set up lines as we went through where he went. After a couple more hours of searching, with no more sign of him. We decided to have lunch and review some footage I had and make a new plan, baffled that we hadn’t found him yet.

After reviewing, we realized that there was a big branch in place where the vitals were and the s**t deflected and hit him in the hind leg. Which made sense why he looked hit so bad and left so slowly. So we decided to go back to where we found last blood and grid search the area. With 3 of us spread out, we made our way down the hill on different game trails. Once we hit the thick skeg, we all picked different line back to the blood. As I was just about back at the blood I hear a hauler from Jay, “oh man I found him!”. Boy did we celebrate, at this point we had spent 5 hours searching. So it was a huge weight lifted. With Jay being the one to find first and last blood and the animal, it was a great way to end another hunt with our buddy.

I took this whitetail on November 2nd this year in my favourite way to hunt them. Still hunting in close quarters in thick bush, on public land. Although the weather in our area has made it difficult with no snow, wet ground and freezing temps at night. I was able to take advantage of a few windy and above freezing days. After a 5km afternoons walk in high wind with a bunch of calling. I was in a spot where I could see over 100yards down the trail. After a calling sequence with the extinguisher deer grunt. I went to carry on up the trail. As I did, I seen this buck step out while looking up the line at me. I grunted as I took a knee to get a better angle for the shot, as he flicked his tail and went to turn I put one in his chest. Putting him in the dirt about 70 yards from where I smoked him with my .firearms 30-06. Grateful to hunt these great Alberta bush bucks.

This buck is one that we’ve been trying to get out of the gene pool for the last 4-5 years. Not sure what happened to this buck to make him grow like this, but we’ve been trying to kill him for the last 5 years since we caught him one camera as a 3 year old looking like this, but smaller. Dad finally got an opportunity on this buck on the third last day of the season. He had made it out the stand just before shooting light that day. Within an hour of sitting there, he could see this old brute, literally tip toeing up the hill towards him. Dad waited till the buck was 50 yards from him and dropped him in his tracks!

We hunt our area a lot, and he’s one of the few bucks we’ve hunted that we never got a chance at in his younger years. This is definitely one of the smartest deer we’ve hunted and are happy to have this elusive bastard out of the gene pool and hanging on the cabin wall for many shared hunting stories to come, well done Pops.
