This is pretty cool! A Canadian who allows a dart throw to determine the next place in the world he will travel to. I fondly remember spinning a globe and saying to myself “Where my finger lands, that’s where I’ll go.”

Travel by Dart is an inspirational tale of Sorin Mihailovici, who throws darts at the world map blindfolded and travels wherever they land - no matter how far or complicated it is. Adventure travel, hidden gems, and travel tips. This YouTube series delivers refreshing life perspectives from Sorin as...

Seems hard to believe, but I’ve been paying more attention to articles like this lately. On the top of my list would be Kinsale, Ireland; Perast, Montenegro and Villifranche, France.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide at Srebrenica. I will always cherish the time given to us by Layla and her family when Liz and I visited the site of that awful massacre.
Layla is one of very few Muslims (Bosniaks) who remain in Srebrenica after the genocide. She told us about the difficulties she encounters on a daily basis finding work, caring for her husband who was severely injured in the war, and dealing with the bullying faced by her children as minorities. Unfortunately, 30 years after the conflict, ethic tensions are still very real. It was a difficult, yet important conversation. She was six years old when she watched all of her male relatives be separated from the females and driven away in busses to their ultimate slaughter. She said she remembers everything from that day. Layla spoke of forgiveness, moving forward, hope for her children, and how important it was for people to visit Srebrenica to learn about
Ellie Wiesel once said, “I believe firmly and profoundly that whoever listens to a witness becomes a witness.” Until that day I only had a surface level knowledge of the genocide at Srebrenica. I thank Layla for making me a witness.

I fondly remember watching Rick Steves’ Europe on PBS as a kid. (Now I just watch him on demand on YouTube.) I have always loved his philosophy on travel.

What a great way to start summer holidays, catching Rick Steves being interviewed on The Current on CBC (Unfortunately, I can’t share the link, but look it up on CBC on Demand.)

A few “Rick-ism” from this interview:

“I wanted to meet people I wouldn’t meet at home…I wanted to rough up my ethno-centrism, I wanted to rearrange my cultural furniture. I wanted to be humbled. I wanted to be more of a citizen of the world.”

“There is a difference between a traveller and a tourist… To be traveller is to get out of your comfort zone and to learn…it’s important for us to travel in a way that broadens our perspective… when we travel we realize that the world is a good place. It’s filled with wonderful people. It’s filled with love.”
