Lisa has spent three seasons in Antarctica and joined us to take her driving skills to the next level. Over the weekend, we focused on situational awareness, balance, and throttle control at high speeds in tight turns, navigating narrow channels with surging swell, catching boats in breaking waves, and mastering the foundations of stern landings. She walked away with more confidence and a whole new set of skills in her toolkit. 🌊🚤

Determination and a combination of skills helped the team retrieve these plastic floats and lines, garbage that had escaped from somewhere and washed up along the outer shoreline of Deception Island, Antarctica.

It turned into a great opportunity to put the towing equipment to use and remove a little more plastic from one of the most remote places on Earth. 🌊♻️

Having an in-depth understanding of your fuel system allows you to think critically in high-stress environments. These are vital skills for being a capable and reliable Zodiac driver.

Bald Eagle sitting next to a Turkey Vulture on the breakwater. Really interesting to see the comparison in size. Normally Turkey Vultures look large while flying due to their wider wings designed to catch thermals while they patrol the sky in search of carrion. Bald Eagles are versatile predators taking fish, birds and small mammals. Although, they too are scavengers, and here these birds are seemingly tolerant of each other while picking at something on the rocks above.

Incredible encounter today with transient killer whales being chased by disgruntled humpbacks. The entire encounter lasted over an hour as we watched the killer whales approaching a group of 20+ humpback whales.
At first all 20 humpbacks chased the orca as fast as they could. It was chaotic and hard to track as the orca were followed by so many other whales. Eventually fewer humpbacks continued the chase and at this point the killer whales turned around a swam directly into the humpbacks. What transpired next was truly awe inspiring as altogether the different species swam around and amongst each other with occasional breaches, tailslaps and incredible amounts of surface behavior.

This is my second time witnessing this exact interaction between these animals and both times have been almost identical. I've read papers describing the behavior without much conclusion to what's happening and feel so lucky and privileged to have witnessed it.
