Some quieter, more textural moments from our ski days on Mt Klitsa.

We really enjoyed playing with shadows and light on the snow, and zooming in to find some really unique textures throughout the two days. Here are our favourites

More from our second day skiing Mt Klitsa in the Alberni Valley 🎿

The clouds ebbed and flowed as the day passed, giving us long moments of bluebird skies and sparkling snow. We enjoyed the views higher up, the softer snow for our limited turns down the mountain, and a low-key charcuterie lunch.

We saw a couple people touring much higher up the slopes than us, likely pushing for the summit. They must have come in via the Brigade Lake Trail because we were the only ones on the Brooke George Trail that day.

We had the time to go even higher than we did towards the summit, but the terrain got significantly steeper and more exposed in some sections, and Katie wasn't feeling confident skinning up one particular slope, so we decided there was no need to push it. We still had a fantastic day hiking, skiing, and playing around with our still pretty new OM camera! πŸ“Έ

Our second day ski touring Mt Klitsa, we got our butts out of bed earlier and made it way higher up on the mountain - about 1350m. We still ran out of time for a summit attempt, but we got some way better lines!

When we finally took our skis off our backs and started skinning up, at about 1000m, we thought we were done with boot-packing... Turns out there were a couple of minor cliff-y and exposed rock sections that forced us to carry our skis again. We were happy that we brought our micro-spikes, and that they fit over our ski boots!

On the way down we tried to find a ski-able route around the little cliffs but had no success. Katie had a little slip just below the steep section, which is how Ryan ended up carrying both skis for a very short time (photo 9). Photo 10 gives an idea how she felt about it 😜

That time we took our skis for a really lovely hike up a mountain...

In February, we had a chance to spend some time exploring around the Port Alberni area. We stayed for 5 days in the town that we normally only pass through on our way to Tofino, and we've gotta say: what a special place!

We spent our first couple days hiking/ski touring on Mount Klitsa, via the Brooke George Trail. There was not a lot of snow lower down, which meant we had a heck of a lot of boot-packing. We certainly earned our turns!!

We had so much fun in the snow, even though we didn't get that much actual skiing in.. just being in the mountains always makes us happy 😊

Skiing on an active volcano πŸŒ‹
(Asahidake ski touring part 2)

The lower slopes of Asahidake were where we actually found good pillowy snow. We said goodbye to the fumaroles and their low visibility and icy slopes, and ventured down the mountain. We really enjoyed getting away from the crowds and carving out our own path - oh the freedom of ski touring!

As we got closer to the main lodge/bottom of the gondola, we realized that we were on the wrong side of a major creek - and the bridge that we'd hoped to find did not exist...

We forged ahead and down anyways, not wanting to transition and skin back uphill to find another way around. Luckily we found a passable snow bridge much lower down! πŸ˜…

Skiing Asahidake (part 1) πŸŒ‹

While we can honestly say that everything we did in Japan was a highlight, skiing on Asahidake really might have taken the cake!

We didn't get a bluebird day, and the snow up high wasn't very great for skiing either... But we got to ski on an *active volcano* right next to billowing fumaroles!! πŸ’¨ (Also called steam vents, but fumarole is more fun to say 😜)

Weather and snow conditions weren't favourable for a summit attempt, so we only toured up a little ways above some fumaroles before returning to the small warming area at the top of the gondola for a hot drink - direct from a vending machine β˜•

After lunch we ventured down the mountain to find softer snow and a frozen waterfall 🌊 We used our fave GPS app, to get the lay of the land and get some great turns in. We did still find ourselves on the wrong side of a major creek at the end of the day...

How do you top off a perfect day of ski touring? In Japan, the answer is simple: onsen ♨️

After our day skiing Giant Ridge on Mt Furano, we drove another 2 minutes down the road to an unassuming parking area. From there, a short icy trail lead to this peaceful, free, open-air, non-gender divided onsen.

When we arrived, there were only a couple other tourists and one local. Most onsens are divided into two separate spaces by gender, and patrons typically soak n**e. Mixed-gender onsens generally require bathing suits to be worn. πŸ‘™

This onsen has a large wooden platform with a couple of benches for people to change and leave their things while soaking. There were two large pools with tubing bringing natural volcanically heated water in and out. We spent most of our time in the lower pool which was a pleasant "hot tub" temperature. The upper pool was quite scorching.. Katie spent a couple minutes in it but Ryan couldn't go in past his feet! πŸ₯΅

The other folks left shortly after we arrived and we had the place totally to ourselves for a little bit, before some other Canadians showed up πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

After soaking our tired muscles, we had a delicious cooked-at-the-table dinner 🍽️
