I was trying to explain this to my guests yesterday, this is a great visual!

Central Coastal Drive PEI
In September 2022, Hurricane Fiona left its mark on PEI National Park's beaches and sand dunes. 🍃
Areas with plenty of vegetation withstood the blustery hurricane winds better than areas which were more exposed. However, beaches with high visitor traffic did not fare as well and experienced significant erosion. Sand dunes offer a safe haven for shore birds and other animals as well as protect PEI’s coastal areas. Every footstep counts when it comes to preserving natural vegetation.
Unless the dunes are impacted by another major event, recovery may take years to a decade. Management strategies have been developed to build and relocate physical structures further inland with the goal of minimizing future damage and expense. It is very important that the dunes in PEI National Park be given space and time to recover.
Thank you for your support in reducing human impact, it has been crucial in the recovery process. Together, we can help these dynamic dunes bounce back stronger than ever!
