Tyne Valley: The People, Their History is a collaboration by author Gary MacDougall and researcher Carolyn McKillop, who happens to be my wonderful mother-in-law.
This book offers an in-depth social history of Tyne Valley, exploring its vibrant past. It covers nearly every facet of community life, from early education and the railroad era to cheese factories, the silver fox craze, the devastating fire of 1960, the establishment of the first community rink, and the reconstruction of the community sports arena after the tragic fire in 2019.
Richly illustrated with photographs, artwork, and original pieces by PEI artist Maurice Bernard, this book is a treasure trove of local history.

Apologies for the long post but we have a big announcement.
The day has come where we say farewell to The Farmhouse. What a journey it’s been.
We loved the thrill of this project, and learnt so much along the way. We jokingly blamed HGTV for our naive views, because they made everything look far too easy, but it was fun to roll up our sleeves and get stuck into it. And of course we left the skilled labour to the professionals, Shawn and Scotty did magnificent job.
We have had the pleasure of hosting guests, living in the house and having friends and family stay too. We have made so many memories and for that we will forever be grateful that we took on this project.
Thank you to those that have helped us along the way. We have been SOOO lucky to have had SOOO much support from family and friends. As many of you know we now live overseas which has made it rather challenging to coordinate things from so far away. The true nature of islanders is to step in and help as much as they can and we felt every bit of this support along our journey.
I can’t list everyone who helped, but I can’t leave without a shout out to a few people who went over and above for us:
Ian’s parents (Carolyn & Duncan), Darcy Gallant, Shawn Ellis, Scott Ellis, Mike MacKendric, Amanda Biggar and Carolyn Biggar. Thank you!
Thank you to everyone in the community that came on the journey (quite literally). I was so surprised how many people came to watch the house be moved and from then on followed the project sharing their links to the house.
And lastly and most importantly, to the new owners. We wish you every happiness in your new home. To hear how excited you are about the house fills our hearts.

📷 Probably the only time I will ever make a post at midnight, but it’s not every day you get to see the Northern Lights from your front door.

We are a company that focuses on providing our guests with accommodation that makes their holiday one that they will always remember. Our love of the local land, the people, and all that the island has to offer makes us proud to roll out the welcome mat and invite you to consider Penguin & Bear for your next stay on Prince Edward Island.
How Penguin & Bear came to be
Ian (Penguin) and Clare (Bear) met in Sydney, Australia in 2014.
Together, we share a love of travel, meeting new people, and exploring the road less travelled. Prior to Clare moving to Sydney, we spent many weekends meeting up in different parts of Australia - preferring to stay at B&Bs that offered a local and personalized touch of the area.
Ian first took Clare back to Prince Edward Island for Christmas in 2015. Clare instantly fell in love with the natural beauty of the island and the warmth of its people. Ian’s cottage was built the year prior to moving to Australia so it was only a matter of time before we decided to create a business that celebrates the things that we enjoy the most.
Our Mission
We believe that vacations should be stress free, relaxing, and enjoyable. We also believe the interaction of the local community, its people, and their stories differentiate a good vacation from a great one.
Our mission is to bring our guests together with the produce, products, and stories of the community while offering spectacular accommodations and customer service in an idyllic country setting.
