Would you go canoe camping?
Canoe tripping has taught me so much. It can be difficult, but provides a perspective reset for modern life.

How to prepare for a wilderness trip?
Part 1

Micro expedition kicks off in less than two weeks!

Going into the backcountry requires a lot of preparation. As we increasingly go outside of traditional wilderness parcs, research becomes essential.

There are some amazing resources out there like the newly revamped cartespleinair.org. Even still, I find it helpful to look at satellite imagery, and cross reference with any other sources, trip reports, or pre-existing maps.

I look for access points, forestry roads, cottages, trails, potential camp sites, trip write ups, etc; I want as much information at my disposal as possible.

Pro tip:
CalTopo is a great (extensive!) mapping tool at an affordable price (not sponsored).

I like to add all the info I can into a custom map, export the map to PDFs which I print, and then also import to my phone on Avenza Maps (also not sponsored).

This gives me physical topo maps, and an electronic version on my phone that taps into my phone's GPS.

You can usually see with decent accuracy where you are on your route. I find this be super useful on big bodies of water where specific features can be hard to read (though I don't recommend depending on any single method, and particularly not on anything electronic - always have backups!)

We bring paper maps + compass, electronic Avenza Maps, and a Garmin GPS as a final backup. You can never have too many redundancies!

It's wild how slow certain things take to learn, whereas other things can get picked up very quickly.

Fun weekend on local waterways sharing the little paddling knowledge we have with Tim ! Learning the J-stroke on a quiet lake, and the next day stepping up to easy moving water, practicing catching eddies and ferries.

Thank you all for 1k views in the first week of Tales From the Kipawa. Not a massive number by today's standards, but that's quite a few people who have seen our work! Means a lot.

More in the works for this season!

Fun outing on the St. François River!

This section, at this water level, had lots of small swifts and a few small R1s. Some beautiful sections on this river and fun to explore something a bit closer to home.

We both soloed this section! Great to practice catching eddies and front ferries.

Big day - fit bit says I burned 7,500 calories 😅

Dîner burgers to wrap up the day!

Grosse journée - ma fit bit me dit d'avoir brûlé 7,500 calories 😅

Burgers casse croûte pour terminer le tout!

Today is the day (7:00 pm)! Stoked / nervous to release TALES FROM THR KIPAWA.

This project has come with such a learning curve.

Reaching out to different brands, not really getting traction, planning a wilderness trip, then pivoting to planning an entire different trip.

Self doubt was present with regards to my expedition readiness, and then again as I made the film.

Along the way we got to start working with Level Six - and it's been such a blast. A great reminder that sometimes you just need to move forward and not wait for everything to be lined up perfectly to start!

So come check out the premiere! And maybe drop a like and a comment over on YouTube ;)
