While the rest of the world is deep in Christmas preparations, I am back in my farmwear getting the-farm-in-pots stored at Deep Root’s food forest ready for winter. I pulled 8 garbage cans of this mycelium and microbe rich carbon out in the last load to mulch over the plants in pots that are moving to the new farm in the spring. A thick layer of this wonderful, then a topping of leaves dropped by Collin. I have so much appreciation for my community. Happy holidays!

So after a day of farm retirement, I strapped on some lace ups and headed over to urban garden for a tour and a chat about fabulous plans for 2022 with farmer Steph. I have to say, it felt slightly unnatural to be mud free from head to toe. It was delightful to see such an amazing lawn transformation to family food production. Scroll through the pics for a peek at an amazing deer fence and my favourite… kohlrabi, hanging out waiting to be dinner!

Every action in the garden has a story, grounding it in time and place, connecting it to community and ecology.

“Part of what I love about gardening is the ritual: it patterns my year and makes me feel close to people like my grandfather, whose ancient rhubarb plants have been split apart and now grow in my own garden. But I also love the sense of agency it gives me. I can walk the linear path of planting a seed, tending a seedling into a healthy plant and harvesting some small bounty that will feed my loved ones. I can deepen my knowledge of our climate, soil amendment, companion planting and other factors that help my bounty grow. Compared to much of the rest of my life, gardening brings clarity and regularity.”

First in a Tyee series of essays on winter’s meaning.

Plants! It’s going to be a beautiful weekend to stop in at Red Damsel and pick up some plants to take home for your own gardens this weekend.

All our plants will overwinter just fine in their pots.

Take home some perennial fruits, black currants, golden raspberry crowns, thornless blackberry, jostaberry, grapevine, and more...

Perennial and annual veg, horseradish, sunchokes, artichoke, leeks and more

Culinary and Medicinal herbs, parsley, mints, oregano, wild garlic, and more

Native plants and plants for bees, birds and beneficial insects, yarrow, columbine, Oso Plum, snowberry, wormwood, Red elder, clematis, honeysuckle shrub, autumn crocus, globe thistle, canna lilies, Himalayan honeysuckle and more....

Pick up some seeds for next year, and grab a bucket of crushed eggshells for your garden while you are here.
