This is Manitoba prairie—and at Down Home Farm, we’re leaning into it 🪻🌼 — slides 2-6 are a little AI glimpse of what my prairie heart is hoping for here.

We burned part of the woods on Friday. On purpose—clearing it back so the ground can breathe again. Fire has a way of giving new growth a chance.

I’ve always loved prairie. Since I was little—picking wildflowers from the ditch for my mom, skipping back to our farmhouse to give them to her. So when a dear friend said, “you should scatter some flower seed after the burn”… it couldn’t have felt more right. Yesterday, I started.

Native prairie seed from Prairie Originals 🌻🌸—Kelly was the loveliest, and I’m so grateful to have found something this thoughtful and local to work with.

No neat rows. No trying to make it perfect. Scattering seed and letting the prairie do what it knows how to do.

I belong among the wildflowers— and this feels like a pretty special piece of prairie for them to grow. 💛

• Manitoba photographers… we’d love your vote! July canola or August wheat for the ideal prairie backdrop? 🌼🌾

Both are on the horizon table at Down Home Farm — our private prairie photo location just outside Winnipeg. Planting is nearly here, but the final crop call has not yet been made.

Some will choose canola for bold yellow bloom and summer energy. Others will wait for wheat, golden hour, and that timeless prairie feel. Which would you choose?

Our new blog post today also shares something personal. After 33 years among this land, can you believe Bry and I only have six photos of ourselves on our grainland. 🥺🤦🏼‍♀️

Six. And the next photo in this post is one of those humble little selfies.

That hit me harder than expected. So this season, we’re changing that with photos of our own being taken here too — through the lens of an intentionally candid photographer that nearly stopped my prairie heart from beating when I came across her work! — .ateliercreative.co ✨

32+ years since our story started right here (slow breath out)… on this very secluded, tucked-away piece of Manitoba’s prairie.

And somehow life keeps circling us back to the same place — almost like it knew where we’d land.

We’ve been farming this land for decades — long before any of these new ideas began — and now we’re shaping this next chapter on the same soil that’s held so much of our story.

Messy, honest, wonderful, figuring it out as we go — with https://www.instagram.com/onthemovestudios/ helping us pull the heart of it forward. 🫶🏻

Mother Nature calling the shots like she always has — steady, stubborn, grounding.

If you’re curious where it’s all heading… https://downhomefarm.ca/ is where it’s unfolding.
