It was foggy all day yesterday and we could barely see a thing. Then the sun suddenly showed up for just a few minutes but right at this dramatic sunset moment. The wind was so wild you can tell the drone was shaking.

And the lakeshore in front of Casolena, it never looks the same twice.

Morning tea at minus twenty. Those warm slushy days fooled us into thinking spring was early, until minus twenty came back in charge.

At least we got clear skies and so much fun outside. The only real challenge is getting from the kitchen to this spot on snowshoes before the tea cools down!

I didn’t realize how many seats for two we created at Casolena… until I started counting.

Apparently, Hoan and I are very serious about sitting together lol. And honestly, we may have built more “seats for two” than we can personally keep up with 😆

Hoan's favourite is the A-nook (pic 2) and mine is the Cielo nook (pic 3)!

The lake side nook (pic 1) will look like that in 2-3 months when the snow all melts.

What makes a place feel like home?

Hoan always says this to me and Emmy: when we leave our shoes at the door, we also leave our hurries and worries out with them.

Leaving our shoes at the door has been a little ritual for our family. No worries, no rush should follow us when we step inside our home.

To me, home is also where familiar comforts slow my thoughts and gentle details lift my spirit when I need it.

Ice shelves may look like gentle snow dunes, but they are hollow underneath. Falling through can be extremely dangerous, as the chance to escape is near zero.

We always remind our guests to keep a safe distance. Know someone traveling to the Great Lakes in the winter? Please share this with them.

We ran away from the GTA, took shelter in the Bruce, and watched the snow storm rolled in from a distance. It was quite a sunrise scene with all the contrasts we could hope to see, all in one shot, right at our back yard.

Blue sky vs. sunrise clouds vs. stormy clouds.
Water vs. ice on the lake.
Calm water surface vs. windy wavy patterns on ice.

Winter in the Bruce is everchanging. Such a privilege to witness these changing scenes with every visit to the Bruce.

The Bruce has been under severe weather with heavy blowing snow and ongoing road closures for almost a week now. It's hard not to feel like we've had enough of winter this year.

But brighter days are ahead. Still bitterly cold, but hopefully sunny and quietly beautiful. Check out these sunny photos we took last winter in the deep cold and you'll understand the beauty I'm talking about.

This is our favorite spot at the cottage. Hoan and I sit here a lot, especially in winter.

Winter in the Bruce can be harsh. Wind, snow, grey days. That’s real.

But sitting here, watching the weather move past the window, always gives us perspective.

No matter what’s happening outside, we remind ourselves to stay calm inside and grateful for the good days we’ve had.

Like my best friend says, whatever it is, this too shall pass.

Being intentionally minimal, while still making a home feel warm, functional and deeply comfortable, is actually much harder than filling it with things. Every choice has to earn its place and every space has to feel calm.

Hoan and I always live a simple minimalistic life because peace matters a lot to us. So when we created Casolena, I trusted that instinct.

But what matters most is not how we feel. It’s how you feel in this home.

Over time, we’ve been beyond lucky to welcome couples seeking relaxation and families seaking reconnection. The greatest feedback we received from these incredible guests is that the home makes them feel rested.

"Feeling rested" sounds simple but means the world to us. That is mission accomplished. You can only feel rested when the environment is calming and your mind is at peace.

We don't want Casolena to be another cottage, or worse, promising a "luxury" experience, which is just an overstimulation.

We want it to be a place where nothing demands your attention, nothing competes to take your precious time. Everything here invites you to pause and put your mind at rest.

Who doesn't come here to do but to feel will truly understand what I'm been rambling about 😊

2025 for us is a year of growth. Good things grow when they’re cared for.

This home grew through the care of all the hands and hearts around it. From guests who treated Casolena like their own, to friends and neighbors who showed up to help and to who keep the home shining.

We’re deeply grateful for another year of growth and nuturing.

Like any good garden, nothing here happened overnight. Thank you for trusting Casolena and being part of its growth!
