The Cascada El Limón is worth a trip if you are in the area of Las Terrenas/Samaná in the DR. I think any waterfall you can swim in is worth it. The clear blue-green water is oh so refreshing and clean, and if you are determined, you can swim under and behind this powerful 50 ft waterfall and cling to the cave wall for a bit - which is a must. I recommend swimming on your back as long as you can, that helps with the water pulling you in the opposite direction of where you want to go. Like anything in life, you will eventually have to face the music and swim on through. It is a bit rocky so watershoes are good.
The Cascada is a popular tourist destination — meaning you most definitely won’t have it to yourself — but sometimes there is a good reason things are popular, and you should see them too.
You can walk in, which is the budget friendly option, or you can go by horse, which we did. No matter your mode, there are about 250 steps you must climb down to the waterfall and then back up, sans horse.
I have been on a few horse adventures and also rode as a kid, so I am not completely uncomfortable on horseback, however, I am not one who typically wants to ride a horse in the Caribbean. I am most definitely generalizing but they don’t often look healthy or happy in these parts which does not appeal or feel right on many levels. I was relieved that our horses on this trek looked well cared for and had pretty good temperaments. The other bonus was that each horse came with a volunteer who walked (or ran) beside you to make sure all was well. Some of the terrain is rocky and slightly hilly but also quite lovely and lush with birds, palm trees, and dense tropical greenery. My volunteer was a lovely soul which I am totally basing on his gentle demeanour, the sparkle in his eye, his unique laugh and his infectious smile. Between my beer Spanish and his limited English, this is what I gleaned from my time with him. My horse was called Rocky, as in Rocky Balboa, The Champ, #1. Rocky definitely had a little pep in his step and a will to be free. I understand both of those things.
