Looking for a great Canadian 🇹🇩 read this Thanksgiving Weekend 🩃? Why not pick up The Break byMĂ©tis writer Katherena Vermette and plan to join us at our virtual book club on October 26th.

Vermette is a rising star of Canadian literature. In her poetry, prose and film, she explores some of the most vital issues facing Canada today: the search for identity and the ongoing effects of historical and institutional prejudice.

Synopsis:

When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break--a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house--she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime.

In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim--police, family, and friends--tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. Lou, a social worker, grapples with the departure of her live-in boyfriend. Cheryl, an artist, mourns the premature death of her sister Rain. Paulina, a single mother, struggles to trust her new partner. Phoenix, a homeless teenager, is released from a youth detention centre. Officer Scott, a Métis policeman, feels caught between two worlds as he patrols the city. Through their various perspectives a larger, more comprehensive story about lives of the residents in Winnipeg's North End is exposed.

A powerful intergenerational family saga, The Break showcases Vermette's abundant writing talent and positions her as an exciting new voice in literary fiction.

Love to read? Want to connect with others who love to read and travel too? Consider asking a friend to join you....perhaps someone you haven't seen in awhile and you can connect on the screen.

Our September read The Guncle. We meet on Tuesday, September 28th @7:30pm EDT.

A warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer. Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is honestly a bit out of his league. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of “Guncle Rules” ready to go, Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a somewhat-stalled career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting—even if temporary—isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that, sometimes, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

With the humor and heart we’ve come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love, patience, and family in even the most trying of times.

The Pineapple Purveyor is going on vacation for our June Book Club....want to join us?

We are excited to share that we have selected “The People You Meet on Vacation” by Emily Henry for our June read.

Our book club will meet on Tuesday, June 29th. Will be a fun event with great dialogue and discussion.

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven’t spoken since.

Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.

Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

S*x, betrayal, and intrigue: A dream vacation on a luxurious yacht turns deadly in this pulse-pounding beach read "chock full of delicious characters who flaunt their sins . . . like the latest Birkin bag" . Belle likes to think herself immune to the dizzying effects of fabulous wealth. But when her best friend, Summer, invites her on a glamorous getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend’s yacht, the only sensible answer is yes. Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once she’s aboard the luxurious Lion's Den, it soon becomes clear this jet-setting holiday is not as advertised. Belle’s dream vacation quickly devolves into a nightmare as she and the handful of other girls Summer invited are treated more like prisoners than guests by their controlling host—and in one terrifying moment, Belle comes to see Summer for who she truly is: a vicious gold digger who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Belle realizes she’s going to have to keep her wits about her—and her own big secret closely hidden—if she wants to make it off the yacht alive.

This weekend is the 147 running of the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of horse racing’s triple crown. No doubt all eyes will be on Medina Spirit! (My money is on Midnight Bourbon)

Since the 1950s, the Black-Eyed Susan (named after the States official flower) has been the official cocktail of Preakness. If you can’t make it to the race this year, you can enjoy a drink at home using the same recipe as the drinks made at the famed Pimlico:

Ingredients:
- 1 part of Maker’s Mark bourbon
- 1 part of DeKuyper Peachtree
- 1 part of Effen vodka
- 2 parts of orange juice
- 2 parts sour mix

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a Preakness glass over fresh crushed ice. Garnish with an orange & cherry flag.

Last year during Covid lockdowns the luxury boutique hotel ( # 6 luxury hotel in the US) put their own spin on the classic cocktail to sip on while celebrating the weekend at home.

The Min-Tea Black Eyed Susan & Mint Meritage Tea Julep

Ingredients:
- 1oz Vodka
- 1oz White Rum
- 1/2oz Grand Marnier (Triple Sec or Cointreau work too)
- 1.5oz Pineapple/OJ Mix
- 4oz Sweet Mint Tea*

Directions: Shake, Strain over Fresh Ice.
Squeeze a wedge of Lemon over the top, and drop in!

Glassware: Rocks
Garnish: Lemon Wedge

Proportions for Mint Tea:
- 1.5c Water
- 1/2c Sugar
- 1 Mint Tea Bag

Directions: Dissolve Sugar in HOT water, Steep Tea, then bring to room temperature. You’re looking for a deep mint flavor to brighten the drink up.

Cheers!

During our virtual travel and cooking experience we will learn how to make a delicious pasta dish - Cavatelli with Asparagus! Cavatelli pasta is popular throughout Southern Italy and traditional today in Abruzzo, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily.

Made from three simple ingredients, durum wheat semolina flour, lukewarm water, and a pinch of salt, cavatelli are considered to be one of the oldest pasta types.

The Kentucky Derby will take place this Saturday - always held on the first Saturday in May. The Derby, the longest running sporting event in the US dates back to 1875 and is often referred to as "The Run for the Roses¼" and has continuously produced “the most exciting two minutes in sport”.

Rich in its traditions, from sipping a mint julep, donning a beautiful hat, and joining fellow race fans in singing “My Old Kentucky Home” – transcend the Kentucky Derby from just a sporting event, making it a true icon of Americana.

The historical Brown Hotel in Louisville recently shared their recipe for this classic iconic cocktail.

Ingredients
2 ounces bourbon
2 ounces mint simple syrup (recipe below)
Crushed ice
Club soda
Fresh mint springs, for garnish
Powdered sugar, for garnish

1. Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Pour in bourbon and mint syrup. Stir gently.
2. Add a splash of club soda, garnish with fresh mint sprig, and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Mint Simple Syrup
1. Combine equal amounts sugar and water and several sprigs mint in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves and syrup thickens slightly.
2. Remove from heat and allow mint to steep until syrup comes to room temperature. Strain to remove mint leaves. Refrigerate until needed.
