ᐯᒥᐢᑲ Pêmiska Tourism ᐯᒥᐢᑲ Pêmiska Tourism is the official page for tourism at the Beardy's & Okemasis' Cree Nation in the heart of Treaty 6

The experiences offered at the Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation shed light on the post-contact history of Indigenous peoples in these territories. From the historic signing of Treaty 6, to the Riel Resistance; from the pass system, to Indian Residential Schools, these significant moments in our shared history have defined ahkameyimok – the resilience of our people. Our experiences are still in dev

elopment, but whether you’re looking to glamp, learn to make bannock, learn to dance; or maybe you’re seeking a deeper understanding of the history of our country, Pemiska Tourism has what you’re looking for! !

140 years ago, the Battle of Duck Lake marked the beginning of the North-West Resistance, a pivotal moment in Canadian history often misunderstood. It was an Indigenous stand for self-determination, and a clear message to Canada that we are proud people with every right to occupy our traditional territory in the ways we see fit.

Today, Pêmiska Tourism shares these stories, inviting you to find heart and history - to learn from us about our land and ways.

🔎 A Glimpse into History: 140 Years Later

This 1883 model Gatling gun, mounted on the Bayfield II for east coast patrols during the First World War, has a history that reaches back much further than this. While the first shot that started the 1885 Resistance was fired from a revolver by a guide of the North-West Mounted Police, weapons like this Gatling gun were soon used against Métis and Cree civilians at the Battle of Batoche.

Willow Cree oral history also suggests these guns were used at other key points along the South Saskatchewan River north of Batoche. Their deployment was part of broader efforts to suppress Indigenous resistance, enforce colonial policies, and facilitate westward expansion into Indigenous lands.

After the 1885 Resistance, this Gatling gun was later repurposed for naval use. Yet its origins remain a reminder of the violence used to dismantle Indigenous governance and expand settler control. Remembering this history means recognizing the resilience of those who resisted — even under gunfire.

🌿 Honouring the Battle of Duck Lake 🌿

On this day, we remember the Battle of Duck Lake, fought on March 26 — a significant moment in the 1885 Resistance. It stood for Métis and Cree rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and the protection of our ways of life.

The courage and resilience shown by our ancestors remain a powerful reminder of the strength within our communities. Today, we reflect on the legacy of Asiwyin, a Beardy's band member and the first casualty of the Battle of Duck Lake, along with all others who lost their lives. We remain committed to keeping these stories alive for future generations.

May we continue to honour their memory by learning, sharing, and walking the path of understanding and respect together.
