Grotto Obligations 🥾🌊

If you live anywhere north of Wiarton, you’ve taken every out-of-town visitor to the Grotto. Aunt from Mississauga? Grotto. College friend from Halifax? Grotto. Your cousin who made you carry the other side of his Yeti “brewskie bucket”? Grotto (then politely never again). It’s basically a Northern Bruce County rite of passage.

And you don’t even complain about it. Because it still looks like you accidentally hiked into the Windows desktop background of someone trying to manifest a sabbatical.

It’s about a 30-minute hike from the parking lot, depending on how many snack breaks your group requires. Then suddenly limestone cliffs, aqua-blue water, and someone fake tripping for laughs. (Kevin, the bit’s expired. Stop it.)

A friend once asked if I ever get numb to Tobermory’s landmarks. The Grotto proves absolutely not.
Unless they were talking about all the Dodge Rams. Then yes. Fully numb.

Dorcas Bay Dreams is now open for July and August bookings! And just like that, your “hold a mug and stare at the water” plan has found its setting.

There’s an old Tobermory saying: “Canada Day at Harbour Way is a perfect stay.”
Okay, fine. We made that up. But it should be a thing.

This cozy 3-bedroom cottage is right in the heart of Tobermory, wedged lovingly between a local brewery and a fish and chip shop that knows its way around a deep fryer. There’s no need to drive. Just walk, snack, and repeat until Tuesday.

You’ll find the sunroom perfect for boat-watching, the deck ideal for Caesar sipping, and the bedrooms tranquil enough to cancel out your uncle’s deep dive into why tugboats beat pontoon boats in the Corinth Canal. (He’s surprisingly informed.)

Tub Life: A Tale of Two Harbours

Little Tub is the beating heart of Tobermory. Steps from live music, local food, and approximately a dozen flowerpot-themed fridge magnets that say something like “This Place Rocks!” Big Tub is the quieter, moodier sibling, perfect for kayaking, shipwreck spotting, and lighthouse admiring.

As a kid, I thought the names Little Tub and Big Tub meant warm bathwater. I’ve never fully recovered from that betrayal. Three failed cardboard boats later, I now know two things: the water stays cold, and naming your boat after a certain Olympic athlete neither guarantees speed or success. RIP Usain Boat I, II, and III.

But names aside, these twin Tubs are Tobermory’s crown jewels. You can kayak in the morning, grab whitefish and fries by noon, and walk from wilderness to waffle cone in 10 minutes flat.

Dorcas Bay Dreams isn’t just a cottage, it’s the setting for your next great mood!

Trillium Season: Nature’s Limited Edition Drop 🌸

Category Is: Lighthouse Realness 🌊💡

Flowerpot Island is beloved for its rock formations, sparkling turquoise waters, and if you’re the type to read plaques out loud to family members, its lighthouse station.

In our ongoing deep dive into Tobermory Lighthouse Lore (we regret nothing), we present: the Flowerpot Island Lightstation. A sturdy little beacon with a flair for drama.

Originally built in 1889 atop Castle Bluff, it featured a wooden tower and keeper’s cottage until 1969, when it was ceremonially “decommissioned.” That’s lighthouse-speak for set on fire and shoved off a cliff. It was replaced with a steel upgrade that strongly resembles the first Lego skyscraper you built as a child. (You’ve really evolved as an architect since then.)

These days, it’s solar-powered, lovingly maintained by Friends of the Bruce and Parks Canada, and still very much available for hiking, viewing, and shedding a tear in front of due to your long-standing appreciation for maritime infrastructure.

One does not simply scroll past Elenriel Cottage. 🌲

You could book a run of the mill cottage this summer. One with suspiciously low ceilings and furniture that looks like it was liberated from a dentist’s waiting room. Or you could flee the realm of Men and retreat to Elenriel, where the ceilings stretch 30 feet high, the beams resemble Ent limbs, and the decor looks like it came from a Rivendell estate sale. (Pristine condition, one previous elf.)

Cove Island Lighthouse: Keeping Ships Safe and Photographers Busy for Over 160 Years 🌊

Built in 1858, this stone titan has been guiding ships and stealing glances ever since. It’s one of six Imperial Towers constructed back when Great Lakes shipping was booming and s***m whale oil was the Edison bulb of its day.

Cove Island Light was the first of the bunch to be lit, which definitely makes the others jealous at reunions. And it’s still rocking its original Parisian Fresnel lens, think of it like the Chanel No. 5 of lighthouse optics.

Sadly, you can’t tour it. (Something about “remote access” and “preserving national heritage.” 🙄) But you can see it from the Chi-Cheemaun while whispering things like “wow” or “I could live there” (you shouldn’t).

What’s this got to do with our cottages? Well, after a day of boat rides, sunburns, and french fries, you’ll want to come home to a firepit, a full kitchen, a cozy bed and absolutely no 95-step spiral staircase built by colonial stonemasons.
