The Milky Way from French Beach on Vancouver Island - a beautiful capture by Murray Sharratt Photography

A closer look at the Milky Way and Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex from about three weeks ago out at beautiful French Beach, Vancouver Island with the good friend and talented photographer Neil Dickie.

The cloud complex, which seems connected to the Milky Way's "Dark Horse" is the closest star nursery to earth at only 460 light years away. Rho Ophiuchi features various types of nebulae, including dark nebulae, which are dense clouds of gas and dust that filter the light of distant stars. One of those stars is Antares, the very bright warm, yellow-coloured star. The supergiant star is the brightest star in the Scorpius constellation and is about 700 times larger than our sun.
