Company Name: Nike Inc.

Ticker Symbol: NKE

Founders: Bill Bowerman, Phil Knight

CEO: Mark Parker

Nike Inc. was founded in 1955 by track athlete, Phil Knight, and his coach Bill Bowerman. In its first year the business made only $8000 but in the second year, it made over $20 000 and has been growing steadily since then. In 1966, Nike opened its first retail store. By 1971, Nike was using the famous “swoosh” logo. Today Nike is worth $96.71 billion and has over $20 billion in assets. Their revenue in the past 9 months equals more than $24 billion! In the 9 months before that Nike made $22 billion, which demonstrates how quickly they grow. Nike has $8.6 billion in debt but that’s nothing based on its immense size. In the past 10 years or so Nike entered the technology industry since then it has partnered with Apple to create iPod Nana Nike Technology and has also created Nike Fuel Band as well as the app Nike+. This was an intelligent move for Nike as the technology industry has been growing steadily for years. The Nike logo itself is brilliantly designed. The “Swoosh” hasn’t changed much since it was first introduced and for good reason. People from all over the world can easily recognize the famous logo. Nike has even introduced customizable shoes on their website http://www.nike.com. Although the Nike stock has been going down recently, overall it has grown a lot.

If I were you, I’d definitely find the money to invest in Nike.

Finding the right investment can be difficult. There are a lot of companies to choose from. When you’re just starting to invest, long-term investments are usually the best. The only problem is long term investments usually involve investing in blue chip companies, which can be quite expensive for a beginner investor. Try saving up your money and investing in big companies with somewhat low stock prices such as Microsoft, Mattel, Starbucks, and Nike. Don’t go for big investments like Google and Amazon unless you have thousands of dollars to do it. When you’re looking for a great stock to invest in, think about the companies you already love. Do you think they’ll grow? If you like the company and you’ll think the company will grow more in the future do some research. Find out things like how much debt they have and where their CEO went to university. Companies that you like are bound to be liked by others too. One very important thing to do is to never invest in an industry you have very little knowledge about and aren’t interested in. It’s always safer to invest in an industry you know a lot about and are interested in. Even the top investors refuse to invest in something they know almost nothing about.

The Wok Box is an Asian cuisine, fast-food restaurant. They sell several different items in boxes for takeout. We decided to try this place after seeing similar food on The Big Bang Theory. When I first arrived I was disappointed by the menu items available. None of them really seemed tasty to me and they didn’t look that different from one another. I ended up ordering the Butter Chicken, which I felt was pretty overpriced. It was about $7 for a small box and the large was $15. The service took a long time. After waiting about 10 minutes, the food finally was ready. The meal was good, although I didn’t feel like it was worth the money. My medium sized box came with a lot of food in it but most of it was just rice. I was disappointed by this place and likely won’t return. I’d recommend trying this restaurant if you never have before but otherwise I’d go somewhere else.

The I’m a Shareholder Kit is an investing book written by Rick Roman. The book covers lot’s of stock market terms. Although I’ve gone over a lot of them in previous posts, it may still be helpful to read. Each page covers a different aspect of the stock market, and some of the content in the book I haven’t covered, so it may be useful for you to read the book. The way the information is worded is a bit childish but it does get the message across in a simple way. I would recommend this book to any kid who’s interested in the stock market. It’s probably the best kids investing book I’ve read in a while.

Okay, so this is going to be a short post but I just wanted to talk about the Nestle stock. On April 18, 2008, the stock was at just over $500.

As you probably noticed by the picture above, the stock dropped a LOT just months after that. How much exactly? Only about $450.

As you can tell, April 2008 would have been a HORRIBLE time to invest.

Duolingo.com is a language learning website that is free and easy to use. It’s a remarkably easy way to learn over 15 languages for FREE. It’s also a great resource to use before travelling to somewhere that speaks a language other than English. You can learn a significant amount of any language by using the website and it’s very quick. I’ve been using the website for quite some time now. The design of Duolingo is impressively well thought out and languages come in an easy to learn format. The only negative to the website is that it mostly only works on reading and writing. The listening and hearing aspect of language isn’t the main focus of duolingo but the company is trying to work on that. I’d use this website before travelling anywhere to become familiar with the native language before going.

Bring your attention inward to your breath. Is it fast and shallow or slow and heavy? Slowly breathe in for the count of 5, hold for 5 counts and exhale for 5 counts and hold. Do this 5 times. Are you feeling more centered? Today show yourself loving kindness. Celebrate your accomplishments, forgive your imperfections and mistakes, feel your feelings, be truly present, speak kindly to yourself and nurture yourself. Check in with yourself, how are you feeling? My wish is that you feel calm and centered.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Montreal (as you could probably tell by the name of the museum). The Museum exhibits a wide range of art including both modern art and traditional portrait style art. When I visited the museum I joined a tour with many others. The tour was very well done, anyone who enjoys art will find this museum interesting. Although I was sick when I visited, I had a nice experience and the tour guide was very friendly. The tour highlighted the changes in art throughout history and the difficulty some artists go through when they introduce another form of art. Overall I had fun at this museum and would return again to see some new exhibits or participate in another tour.

Bring your attention inward to your breath. Is it fast and shallow or slow and heavy? Slowly breathe in for the count of 5, hold for 5 counts and exhale for 5 counts and hold. Do this 5 times. Are you feeling more centered? Continue to breathe slowly as you bring the image of an individual you have difficulty with into your mind, someone who may test your patience or get under your skin. Try to observe their face through your mind’s eye. Try to visualize details of their face, the color of their eyes, perhaps the shade of their hair. Keep them in your mind as you bring a smile to your face and wish them unconditional happiness, repeat the following:

May you be Happy!

May you be Healthy!

May you be Safe!

May your life be filled with joy!

Check in with yourself, how are you feeling? For some this is a very difficult exercise, be kind to yourself and don’t judge your feelings, acknowledge them and let them go.

My wish is that you feel calm, centered and compassionate.

My son was recently invited to a birthday party. He was very insistent of the gift he wanted to buy and he took extra time creating a birthday card. When the day came we dropped him off at the party. He gathered up his gift and card and off he went for 3 hours of hard playing, cake eating, pop drinking and birthday singing. When we picked him up, he thanked his hosts for inviting him and we went on our way. A few days later he received a handmade thank you card from the birthday boy in the mailbox. This small gesture was so well received by my son. He was thrilled that the birthday boy took the time to thank him for not only the gift but also for celebrating his special day. This act of kindness brought a big smile to my son’s face.

It is a small thing to say a kind word but the benefits are immeasurable. A simple and meaningful ‘thank you‘ should never be underestimated, try it and watch how it can bring a big smile to the recipients face. And as William Arthur Ward wrote feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it.

25/05/2016

Time to wrap up everything I’ve said about investing in the last 3 months. Don’t worry, this isn’t my last investing post but it is the last basic investing post. I’ll review everything I’ve taught you, so get ready for a looooooong post. Seriously, get comfortable because you’ll be here a while.

Let’s start with my first (technically second) investing post, What is a Stock?

Basically, a stock is a very small part of a company. If you own a stock you actually own part of a company. Yes, that means that you can actually own your favourite companies!!! Below is the video I posted on my What is a Stock post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3QpgXBtDeo

February 12, Who is Dow Jones? What is the Nasdaq?

The Dow Jones, the Nasdaq, the S&P 500 and so many others are called indices. Indices are an easy way of tracking how the overall stock market is doing. If the Dow Jones goes up, you could estimate that most stocks on the stock market will go up too. Almost all indices work differently so most people have a preference and use only the one they like the best.

February 13, What is a Ticker Symbol?

To explain it simply, a ticker symbol is an easy way to find information on a companies stock. Ticker symbols are usually 1-5 letters long and to use it just go to a website like Yahoo! Finance and type it in to find all the stock information you could ever want. Some famous Ticker Symbols include AAPL (Apple), GOOG (Google), and MSFT (Microsoft).

February 14, Trading Time

As you hopefully remember, you can only trade stocks at a certain time on certain days. I personally think it’s annoying but it does have it’s benefits. This time is from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM in New York, so you may have to adjust for your time zone. You’re also only allowed to trade stocks on weekdays, which means no trading on weekends or holidays.😦

February 15, Stock Brokers

Stock Brokers are the people that make buying stocks possible. There are both online stock brokers and stock brokers who are real people. I would recommend buying stocks from an online stock broker as they are much cheaper and quicker than real life stock brokers although real life stock brokers can provide important knowledge that online ones cannot.

February 17, Bears and Bulls

Bears and Bulls are probably the weirdest stock market terms that exist. A bull market is good, it means that, on average, the market is trading up. A bear market is the exact opposite. If it’s a bear market than the market is trading down on average.

February 19, Dividends?!

Dividends are a companies way of saying thank-you for being a shareholder. Basically, with a dividend, you get a few cents per stock per year (or 3 months, depending on the company). Not all companies offer Dividends, but they are a great reward for being a shareholder.

February 21, Blue Chip Stocks

Blue Chip companies are the big brands in the world. They are probably the safest investments there are and although they won’t go up as fast as some lesser known companies do, there is a very high chance that they will go up over time.

February 21, Stock Splits

Stock Splits are a strategy by businesses to make it easier for everyone to buy stocks. If a stock split happens then the amount of stocks everyone has will double but the value of the stocks will halve. By doing this people can afford more stocks and people with lower budgets can buy them more easily.

February 22, Private Vs. Public

Some companies sell stocks while others don’t. A company that chooses to sell stocks is called a public company while a company that chooses not to sell stocks is private. Subway is very famous for not being publicly traded.

February 23, The Foundations of a Great Company – Coca-Cola

February 28, Shares Outstanding

Shares outstanding is a simple stock market term used to determine the amount of shares in a company are on the market. You can use this to calculate how much of a company one share is worth. So if a company has 100 shares outstanding, 100 shares are worth 100% of the company while 1 share is worth 1% of the company. If you don’t understand, read the entire post by clicking on the link above.

February 28, The Stock Market in the Past Five days?

February 28, Market Cap.

March 5, Getting to Know Your Quarterly Report

A quarterly report is a report that all business in the U.S. and Canada are required to publish every 3 months. It outlines almost every business activity that happened in the past 3 months and is very important information when considering investing.

March 12, Foundations of a Great Company – Mattel

March 15, Long Term Vs. Short Term

To explain it simply a short term investment is an investment that is intended to only last a short period of time. A long term investment is an investment that is intended to last a long period of time. Long term investments are safer but they require a lot of time. Short term investments don’t guarantee profit but they only last a short period of time. Both are important to learn about when investing.

March 18, Stock Market Simulators

March 21, Volume

Volume refers to the amount of stocks exchanged in a single day. So if the volume is 1 000 000 the amount of stocks bought/sold in that day was 1 000 000.

March 23, Diversify Your Portfolio

Diversifying your portfolio is a simple way to ensure you don’t lose money. By buying stocks from several different companies you save yourself if one of your stocks goes way, way down.

March 28, Apple

March 30, The News, Your New Best-Friend (Sort of)

Today, I want you to go outside and breathe in the air; bring mindful awareness to your breath and the fresh air you are inhaling. Be fully present in this moment and inhale deeply. Be aware of the air as it fills your lungs, does the air feel warm or cool, heavy or dry, is there a sweet scent to the air. Breathe in deeply and calm your body and mind. Breathe out and smile. Check in with yourself, how are you feeling? My wish is that you feel calm and centered.

Drip. Drip. Drip. Drips are just another one of the many stock market terms out there and they’re a simple way to accumulate more shares in a company. Some businesses offer Drips (Dividend Reinvestment Plans) so that you can buy stocks directly from them, rather than from a stock broker. By using a Drip you save a lot of money because you have to either pay a very small fee or no fee at all, unlike if you buy stocks from a stock broker. Sadly, there are some negatives to Drips. Not all companies offer drips, and even when they do the business sometimes requires you to already own one or more shares in that company.

Want to know what companies offer Drips? Go to http://www.giveashare.com/drips.asp to see a list of some of the businesses that offer them.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt.2

Year: 2015

Rating: PG-13

Director: Francis Lawrence

Running Time: 2hr 17min

Genre: Adventure

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2is the thrilling finale to the Hunger Games series. In the film Katniss continues her attempts to take down the Capitol. I personally think the movie was very exciting. The creativity involved in creating some aspects of the film is absolutely impressive. There were tonnes of twists involved and I became very surprised by some of the things that happened. Although this was an incredible movie, it felt like some of the excitement from the first two movies was left out. Less happened in this movie than previous ones and I wish it had been more exciting. I still did enjoy this movie, but it will never be as good as the beginning of the series was.

The News, Your New Best Friend (Sort of)

The stock market is always changing. One minute a great stock could be at $3 the next it could be at $15, and a few more minutes later it could be at $1. You’ve got to learn to find great stocks quickly in the stock market and know when a stock will go up or down. To know when a stock price will change you have to look at a lot of different factors, but the most important of these is the news. If a news article is published highlighting the great ways you can get in touch with others using social media the stock price of companies like Facebook and Twitter will likely go up. And the opposite could happen too. If a news article comes out warning readers of the dangers of eating fast food, the McDonalds and Wendys stock price could go down. Try flipping through a newspaper or searching through a news website often to get a feel for what industries will be affected by the articles and to find great new industries to invest in.

Volume

To explain it simply, volume is the amount of shares traded in a single period of time. This number is very important. Generally you want a minimum volume of 750 000, but the higher the number the better. This ensures that you will have a chance to sell your stocks when you do decide to sell them. If nobody completes a trade with you, you’ll be stuck with your shares until someone does decide to trade with you. You don’t ever want to be stuck with a stock you don’t want, so it’s very important to make sure that the volume is always high.

Stock Market Simulators

Stock Market Simulators are a great way to learn how to invest in companies. They can teach you a lot and you don’t have to worry about losing money. There are several great online stock market simulators and I know of one great app that anyone can use. There is a downside to stock market simulators though. For the most part people make short term investments rather than long term ones on these simulators and although short term investments are great, you need to learn about both to be truly experienced in the stock market.

The Crayola Easy Animation Studio

According to Crayola, the Crayola Easy Animation Studio makes it easy for any kid to create animations and allows the child to design their own characters to animate, but it was anything but easy. Crayola almost never disappoints me with their products, but this was difficult and unpleasant to use. Crayola makes the product look easy and lots of fun and I thought it would be until after I downloaded the animation app. The app is supposed to track the movements of an adjustable figure, but it takes a lot of work to adjust the figure so that the electronic you’re using can actually “read” the markings on it and replace them with a semi-user designed character. I did not enjoy using this toy, I cannot believe that it won an award as it was a complete disappointment.

Long Term Vs. Short Term

The difference between long term and short term stocks is fairly self explanatory but it’s important to fully understand both types of investments before investing yourself. A long term investment is an investment that the investor intends to rise over a long period of time. A short term investment is just the opposite. Anyone who intends an investment to be short term hopes that the value of the stock will rise over a short period of time. Both types of investments are great and it’s important to understand the differences of both before investing in any company.

Fluxx (Card Game)

Players: 2-6

Playtime: 5-30 minutes

Fluxx is the card game with ever changing rules. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually extremely easy to learn. The objective of the game is to be the player with the two “keeper” cards (each keeper card displays a different object) that match the two keepers on the “goal” card currently in play. But after that, it gets really wild. Players can change the goal, add or eliminate rules, steal cards from other players, and so much more! The game is great for families or friends and offers enjoyment for all ages. Fluxx comes in over 6 versions other than the original, such as pirate Fluxx, zombie Fluxx, and monster Fluxx, and can be bought in several languages. I would recommend this game for any family game night, sleepover, or party in the world.
