2026 was a record year at Spirit Bear Lodge. More dates, more guests, more boats, and even after 25 years- some of our most incredible wildlife encounters yet.

Today is the last day of our season and we want to give a heartfelt thank you to our guests for making your journey to Kitasoo Xai'xais Territory and discovering the Great Bear Rainforest with us.

Thank you to our guides and staff for all of the early mornings, long days and late nights. Thank you to our community for your continued support. And thanks to all of the Bears, the Salmon, the Whales, Birds, and the many marine and terrestrial animals that made this year so special for all of us.

Thanks to all of you for following along on this journey! See you in 2027.

Earlier this spring, our guides Aaron Bechard and Cat Cowan made a remarkable discovery: a rare Pacific Sleeper Shark washed ashore in Kitasoo Xai'xais Territory. After setting up a camera trap, the team captured unprecedented footage of coastal sea wolves scavenging on the deep-sea shark, a powerful glimpse into how ocean depths sustain life on land.

This story is now featured in a new short documentary, "The Wild Diet of Sea Wolves," produced by CBC British Columbia. Grounded in Indigenous stewardship, community observation, and marine science, the film highlights the deep-rooted coexistence that continues to safeguard these wild spaces.

This is what ethical bear viewing looks like. 🐻

As we were walking in towards our designated viewing site, a male sub-adult Grizzly popped up from the riverbank and began walking in our same direction. No problem, sometimes plans change.

As always, we kept our movements low and slow. We moved as a single group, allowing our presence to be known but doing everything possible not to disrupt. We strictly follow protocols and patterns that make our movements predictable.

These bears are familiar with us, and we are quite familiar with them. We study their movements, behaviours, families and relationships. These are just some of the ways we create an ethical, safe space for observation while preventing interaction.

This is Mooksgm'ol in autumn: calm, methodical, and operating at peak ecological efficiency.

Waterfall plunge pools are the premium real estate of the Great Bear Rainforest. As salmon attempt to scale the cascade, they are forced into predictable holding pockets. A dominant bear doesn't need to chase fish across open gravel bars, he simply anchors himself in the eddy and lets the river bring his meals to him.
