How we saved 75k by housesitting

Housesitting has probably changed our lives more than any other travel hack we’ve ever tried.

When we first started travelling long-term, we didn’t have much money. We left Canada in 2018 with about $1,500 in savings, so finding ways to make travel cheaper was quite literally a necessity to make this lifestyle possible.

Over the years, housesitting has given us places to live in some pretty incredible parts of the world, let us stay places for weeks or months at a time, and saved us tens of thousands of dollars that would have otherwise gone towards accommodation.

$76,230 is a wild number to look at, but it’s even wilder to think about all the things we’ve been able to do because we weren’t spending that money on rent.

Nevermind the 3 years we lived in a van, which I calculated at an additional $75,060 rent saved - totalling $151,290 that we’ve saved on rent & accommodation by living nomadically.

One of the hardest parts of changing your life is admitting that you actually want something different.

Because once you admit it, you can’t really un-know it.

You start noticing how often you say “maybe someday” about the things you actually care about. You start questioning whether you’re genuinely happy or just comfortable. You start wondering how much of your life is based on what you want, and how much is based on what you thought you were supposed to want.

And I think that’s why I love asking myself uncomfortable questions.

Not because I think every answer means you need to quit your job, move across the world, or completely reinvent your life. Sometimes the answer is actually that you’re happy where you are.

But sometimes you realize you’ve been avoiding a change because you’re scared of what happens when you actually go for it.

I think one of the hardest parts of building the life you actually want is accepting that, for a while, it might not look anything like it.

We’ve spent the last 8 years traveling, living abroad, moving around and generally choosing a life that looks pretty different from the traditional one.

But there have also been plenty of seasons where it looked very ordinary.

Working jobs we didn’t plan on doing forever.
Saving money instead of spending it.
Staying home when we wanted to travel.
Living somewhere because it made financial sense, not because it was our dream destination.

And sometimes it felt like we were putting the life we actually wanted on hold.
But looking back, we weren’t at all.

Look, for most of us, if you want the freedom to travel, there might be a period where you have to work more than you want to.

If you want to live abroad, there might be years where you’re saving for it instead of doing it.

If you want to work for yourself, there might be a long time where you have a completely normal job while you build something on the side.

And I don’t think that means you have to hate your life in the meantime.

I actually think there’s something really valuable about learning to appreciate the ordinary parts too.

Because an extraordinary life isn’t necessarily made up of extraordinary days. but thousands of very normal days where you make small decisions that eventually give you more freedom, more choices and more of the life you actually want.

38 days until we do it again!!!

The version of you who moves overseas won’t be the same person who comes home.

Every time we’ve moved abroad, we’ve had to figure out how to build a life from scratch. You don’t have your usual people around, some days you feel like you don’t know how anything works, you don’t know where to go when you need something, and in some cases, you don’t even know how to communicate properly.

But as frustrating as that can be, there’s something about having to figure everything out yourself that changes you.

One of my biggest takeaways from living overseas and travelling so much is realizing how capable I actually am. Things that would have overwhelmed me before suddenly become things I just figure out.

We’ve also started realizing how much of our identities were tied to the lives we had before. When you move somewhere where nobody knows who you are or what your life looked like before, you get this freeing opportunity to just be yourself.

And sometimes you don’t even know who that is yet.

You leave thinking you’re going to discover a new place, but you end up discovering so much about yourself instead.

And now that I’m moving again next month, I know I’ll probably come home as a slightly different version of myself again.

And I’m so excited to meet her.

When we first moved abroad and started YouTube, I was editing everything on my old laptop from college. 

I remember exporting one video before bed, hoping it would be finished by the time I woke up the next morning. 

If it crashed halfway through the night, I’d start all over again. 

How times have changed, haha.
