We're back in Canada on a road trip to the Okanagan where we are reminded of the stunning beauty of this province.
Sometimes, having lived here most of our lives, we take it for granted. But after we step away for a bit and return we see it with a renewed perspective. I suppose that applies to many things in life. ✨

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻💀🕸️🥸🍭🍬

Some good friends of ours arranged an all ages Halloween party and we got to play like we were all kids again.🧡 Even some of the classics came out, like bobbing for apples and playdough games. It was a fun way to celebrate together in a foreign country.

Our teens' social circle from varying corners of the world.🌏

Our friends, the parents, who continue to inspire me, after all these years.✨

It doesn't matter where we meet up in the world. It just matters that we do.

We have been so incredibly fulfilled to be amongst this group, and we're also excited to meet up with our many other worldschooling friends and families in other countries on future trips.

It may seem odd that we need to travel in order to meet up with our community. Often crossing oceans and waiting months to see one another again.

Truth be told, it's not easy, and it may be costly or "inconvenient" to most.

But to us, being a part of this non-traditional community, seeing who our kids have become, realizing just how much travel has made them who they are, and feeling the strength of our family bond that has no doubt formed as a result of this lifestyle, makes it all 1000% worth it.

We began our worldschooling journey in 2017. And now our eldest teen is already in her final "school" year! 🥹

Looking back, our only regret is that we hadn't started sooner.

Tarragona, Spain 💗 Life here has been laid back, easy going and calm...also filled with festivals, good food, celebrations, and bathed in sunshine ☀️

And no, it's not where tarragon 🌿 originated from 😆

Tarragona was originally named Tarraco, similar to the Roman word for 'citadel'. Perched up high, this hilly town has gotten our heart rates going, not just from the uphill exercise but also from the pure beauty of our surroundings.

Tapas food tour 🥘😋 One of our favourite things to do while traveling are food tours or cooking classes.

They typically include not just information about the food, but also a lot of insight into the culture and history of the city and country itself.

For instance did you know that "tapa" in Spanish means "cover"? Little plates of food were put on top of a drink to "cover" and prevent dust and insects from getting into the drink. People used to drink at standing bars, with their horses nearby, and needed the small plates of bread and food to help soak up the alcohol. And hence, tapas were invented. Who knew?

We have enjoyed wonderful food tours and cooking classes in Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Spain. If you've got any favourite food tour/class experiences we'd love to hear about them!

A beautiful day spent reunited with these gorgeous gals 😍

Worldschooling has allowed us to build countless friendships from around the world. We have traveled to several countries together with these particular teens and their families. It was wonderful getting to hang out and discover Barcelona together.

They researched and found a couple of places for amazing churros and hot chocolate, and 1 euro tacos that were not only cheap but delicious!! We couldn't resist.

𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧/𝘿𝙖𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙥 𝙩𝙤 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣!💕 First stop is Barcelona where we meandered for hours along La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter, Eixample, El Raval and Sant Antoni.

One of the many things we love about travel is all the walking we do! 🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏻‍♀️Such great exercise - which means travel is good for your health - am I right or am I right?

Of course we balance this with eating a lot 😂

When you cruise what do you do for wifi? 🛜 The data packages offered on the ships can be pretty pricey, especially if cruising for more than a few days. We've paid for it before when we needed it for work, but when on vacations with family we usually opt out and simply unplug. Port days, however, are a different story! 🤪 Our teens are usually clamoring to get off the ship to find some free wifi and get their fix.

If you're heading off on an Alaskan cruise and won't be splurging on the data package, there was free wifi in the port of:

𝗦𝗸𝗮𝗴𝘄𝗮𝘆 = find the large field in front of the public washrooms (slide 2)
𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘂= at the public Library by the port. Take the elevator up to the 5th floor where the library is. We were incredibly grateful for this since it was pouring rain that day (slide 1). Don't forget to be quiet as it's a library afterall 🤫
𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗻= we didn't have any luck finding free wifi there but other cruisers told us you need to walk pretty far east off the port. If you find any let us know!

Bonus for us was in Skagway we got to sample some Alaskan pints 🍻 while our teens were soaking up the wifi by the field.😋

We're the August babies 🎂🚢 We're not so young anymore, but I feel extremely fortunate to have these times together with my dad and my brother. With the exception of maybe 1 year of my life when I was working out-of-country we have always celebrated our birthdays together. This year was no exception. It was a special family cruise for sure. 💫

While we did get quite a bit of rain during our cruise to Alaska we also got many days of absolute pure gloriousness (is that a word?) 🤩 The glaciers and surrounding snow capped mountains simply took our breath away. 🏔️

We went from extreme weather in our first port, Juneau, to beautiful sunshine in Skagway. In fact, when we ported in Juneau all of the emergency alerts on our phones were going off warning of glacial outbursts flooding the area.😳 Apparently it's very common every year around August. We were worried the rest of our trip would be rainy but the sun came out and we had blue skies for the rest of our journey. ☀️

August is a month of birthdays 🎂 in our extended family and we're fortunate enough to get to travel together every year around this time.

This year our family celebrations took place on board an Alaskan cruise! 🚢 Although it's true August is peak busy season, it's the best time of year to visit Alaska when the weather is mild, often with blues skies and stunning scenery.

It's always bittersweet leaving to return home after one of our adventures. 🧳 We'll always remember Budapest fondly, where we all grew tremendously, both as parents and as teens. We all saw, experienced, and learned. Travel does this.

Our teens loved their time in Budapest so much that they now call it Buda𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁. ❤️🥹

We will miss you Buda𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 😘 Thanks for all the memories.💌
