Some great shots from our recent solo canoeing course on the Clearwater River. Boofing, wave turns, side surfing, running technical lines in class 3, practicing the SHARC stroke, sling-shots, blending strokes, linking manoeuvres, running the ‘wet line’, and just enjoying what this incredible river has to offer. Definitely doing this again next fall!

Middle Shuswap River Cleanup Paddle Event 2026 complete! True to tradition, the weather was much better than the forecast would have us believe. Garbage was at an all-time low (only two large contractor bags full plus an old stove and half a paddle board), at least 50 bald eagles, and thousands of Kokanee and Sockeye. A joy to be paddling among the fall colours.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘?

That’s how Dr. James Raffan became an 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻.

A coin toss brought James to Canada. 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱, taking him by 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗲, 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗱, 𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿, 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝘀𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 as he explored, researched and learned across the North.

Now he’s bringing those stories to the stage.

Join Elements Adventure Company on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬 for the 14th annual river cleanup paddle event as we paddle a section of the 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗽 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝗺, clearing the river and shoreline of the stuff that doesn’t belong in a waterway.

🏆 Congratulations to Tours, winner of the Indigenous-led Paddling Experience Award!

Owned and operated by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Takaya Tours has been sharing Coast Salish culture since 1999. Based on Burrard Inlet between North Vancouver and Deep Cove, the company offers guided interpretive paddles in traditional-style ocean-going canoes. Along the way, First Nations guides share songs, legends, stories and the history of ancient village sites, turning a day on the water into something much deeper.

As one nominator put it: “The tour was very impactful because of the close personal ties to the land, water and history of the area... The tour guides, especially Seth George, cultivated a fun atmosphere of paddling in beautiful scenery while also making room for moments of reflection as we passed important village sites.”
