Today and tomorrow May 05 we recognize Red Dress Day, a time to honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+)

The red dress is a powerful symbol of those who are missing and those whose lives were taken too soon. It represents remembrance, love, and the deep connections held by families, communities, and Nations. 🪶

Songhees Tours team takes time to acknowledge Red Dress Day by sharing its significance and holding a safe, respectful space for guests to learn, reflect, and ask questions.

We will gather our team in the Inner Harbour to drum and sing the Women’s Warrior Song in honour and remembrance at 12:00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us.❤️

Below is a great resource from the University of Victoria to learn more about today and see what events are happening locally.

Inspired by and honouring place, we are a community-minded, globally engaged university where we transform ideas into meaningful impact.

Due to a recent loss within our community, we will be postponing upcoming tours for this week.

Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time.

We recognize the importance of coming together to support one another, and we appreciate your understanding as we take this time.

həyšxʷq́ə siem, Thank you.

Our Songhees Salish Seawolf canoe has been cleaned, cared for, and blessed by Mike Charlie, marking an important and meaningful start to this year’s season.

We’ve officially begun our canoe practices on the ocean with a smaller team, and we’re feeling strong and focused.
This season, we’re also working alongside new safety instructors and have added new safety gear to ensure the highest level of care for both our team and our guests.

Our ocean canoes are called a snəxʷəɫ.
Canoe pulling is more than just being on the water—it’s about culture, connection, and respect. During our practices, we continue to ground ourselves in these teachings:
respect for the canoe, for each other, for the ocean, and for the paddles. It’s about working together as one. 🛶
We continue to practice our Coast Salish canoe protocols by singing and drumming every time we leave and return into the inner harbor.

The Lekwungen people have been pulling canoes for generations, and we’re honoured to carry those traditions forward. We’re excited to share this experience with our guests this summer!

Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.
Hay’sxʷ q̓ə 🙏

Songhees Tours participated in the Victoria At Dusk event, where our team shared stories around the fire inside the beautiful Mungo Martin Big House. We served traditional tea to guests and received support from several Songhees youth and elders. The Lekwungen dancers opened the event and it was amazing! We extend our gratitude to Krystal and the Royal BC Museum team for their assistance in hosting a successful session that drew hundreds of attendees. The event's strong attendance and positive reception were a testament to its success. We anticipate future collaborations to showcase the Lekwungen people's identity and the history of our ancestral lands.

The Songhees Tours team is proud to have been part of the Lekwungen Placemaking Project — a meaningful collaboration between the Songhees Nation, Esquimalt Nation, the Lekwungen Placemaking Working Group, the Lekwungen Language Team, the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, and Destination Greater Victoria.
This inspiring project highlights the history, art, and living stories of the Lekwungen people, shared in the heart of Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Through public artwork, language revitalization, and interpretive storytelling, visitors and community members alike are invited to connect with the rich cultural heritage of these lands and waters.
To learn more about the Lekwungen people, our traditions, the artwork, and the language woven throughout this project, we invite you to book a tour with Songhees Tours.
