Many years ago, I was an international student studying tourism in Spain when I met an exchange student from Poland. We became friends, and eventually that friendship turned into an invitation I almost didn't take. Ten days in Poland, guided by someone who actually knew the place. No guidebook. No tour operator. Just firsthand experience through the eyes of someone who called it home.

And I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved all of the old squares in Poland, and the pierogies were absolutely delicious. 🥟

That probably sounds simple, but honestly? That kind of genuine delight is what I chase in travel. I wasn't expecting Poland to stop me in my tracks. It did.

We moved through Warsaw, Krakow, and Poznan, but the moment I still talk about happened in Wroclaw, known as the city of gnomes. These tiny bronze figurines are hidden everywhere throughout the streets, sidewalks, and alleyways. You turn a corner and suddenly there's a little gnome tucked beside a lamppost or peeking out from a building. What starts as a walk becomes a full treasure hunt through cobblestone streets. I was looking down at every step wondering what I'd find next. ✨

Warsaw surprised me too. At the vodka museum, you don't just sample the very tasty Polish vodka, you actually learn how it's made through an entertaining and interactive exhibit. It reframes the whole thing. And the Polish b**r alongside those pierogies? Genuinely good. I wasn't expecting that either.

What moved me most was the history. So much of Poland's architecture was destroyed during World War II, and witnessing how these cities were rebuilt with such care and pride is profound. You can feel how seriously Poles take the preservation of what they've reclaimed. It leaves a mark on you.

Have you ever had a destination completely surprise you? Poland was that for me. It offers everything that history buffs, foodies, and curious slow travelers are looking for, and it connects beautifully with a broader Central European itinerary through Germany, Austria, or Czech Republic.
