The Victoria Day long weekend in Wasaga Beach has always meant something special to me.
Not just as Mayor, but as someone who grew up here my whole life.
If you were around in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, you know exactly what this place was when summer arrived. The first warm weekend would hit, and suddenly the whole town came alive. Cars cruising the strip all day long. Music blasting out the windows. Packed patios. Lineups for ice cream. The beach shoulder to shoulder. Everyone coming here for the same reason — because Wasaga Beach was the summer destination in Ontario.
And honestly, with our rolling sand dunes and 14 kilometers of warm shallow beach, there is nowhere else in the world, let alone the province, quite like it.
You’d spend the whole day at the beach, hit the arcades at night, grab food with friends, run into people you hadn’t seen since the year before, and somehow end up staying out way later than you planned. Wakestock weekends. Fireworks over the bay. Busy river days. Go karts. Waterslides. Concerts. The energy here has always been unforgettable, and for so many families across Ontario, some of their best memories were made right here in Wasaga.
That’s why the work happening now matters so much.
We all know this town has gone through changes over the years. We’ve seen challenges. We’ve seen parts of the beachfront struggle. But we’ve also never stopped believing in what could become again.
Today, we’re building toward that future. The redevelopment happening at Beach Area 1 and across our community is about bringing new life back to the heart of Wasaga while protecting everything people already love about this place.
New public spaces.
Better infrastructure.
Improved roads and streetscapes.
More family-friendly attractions.
Year-round tourism.
New businesses, hotels, housing, trails, parks, and gathering spaces that will help Wasaga thrive for generations to come.
The vision behind is simple: preserve the beach, protect the natural beauty that makes this place special, and create a stronger, more vibrant community for residents and visitors.
Because this town has always been more than just a beach town.
It’s home.
And now, watching a new generation experience Wasaga for the first time — seeing kids run into the water in May even when it’s freezing cold, hearing families laugh on the boardwalk, seeing patios and seasonal businesses opening up — it reminds me why so many of us never left.
This community is growing. Evolving. Improving.
But the feeling of summer in Wasaga Beach? That part never changes.
To everyone visiting this weekend, whether you’ve been coming here for 30 years or this is your very first trip, welcome.
Summer starts here. ☀️🌊🏖️🍦🚗🎶❤️
