BREAKING NEWS: The Birds are Back in Town: Two Piping Plovers Return to Wasaga Beach - Town expands collaborative stewardship efforts as nesting season continues along Ontario’s most-visited beachfront destination

The Town of Wasaga Beach is pleased to share that two Piping Plovers have returned to the beachfront for the 2026 nesting season.

“This is good news that reflects the Town’s commitment to proactive, responsible stewardship,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This Council believes Wasaga Beach can stand among the great recreation and nature-based destinations of the world — where tourism, community, and conservation thrive together. We’re proud of our parks, communications, and municipal law enforcement teams who are leading this work on the ground, with support from Birds Canada and our provincial and federal partners.”

As responsibility for beachfront management has transitioned from the Province to the Town, Council and staff have established strong stewardship partnerships, maintained established conservation practices, and advanced the development of a longer-term beach management plan.

Did you know? The Town of Wasaga Beach—in partnership with Ontario Parks—is a steward and guardian of the longest freshwater beach in the world. Wasaga Beach offers 14 kilometres of accessible beachfront, which is organized into 8 different beach areas.

✅ Different beach areas are cared for differently.

✅ NO-GO: At Beach Area 1, there is a “no-go” zone where the mouth of Nottawasaga River meets Georgian Bay. People are not permitted to enter this small but significant area, which has been federally designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI).

✅ NO-RAKE: At Beach Area 1, the Town also respects a “no-rake” zone from the ANSI to the municipal Spruce Street parking lot. Although mechanical grooming doesn’t happen in this area, it is open for residents and visitors to enjoy 🏖️ However, we do ask that all beachgoers obey the rules and posted signs, and stay out of any fenced areas that may pop-up throughout the season. That’s because this area has been federally designated as critical habitat for the endangered . Each year, a small number of these endangered birds visit Wasaga Beach to nest, and the Town is committed to doing its part to help protect them. ✅ GROOMED: In front of Beach Drive—and west throughout Beach Area 2 and beyond—the Town and Wasaga Beach Provincial Park use mechanical grooming equipment to remove garbage, glass and debris to keep the beach clean, accessible and safe for the public.

BREAKING NEWS: Wasaga Beach Expands Free Resident Parking to Beach Areas 1 and 2 for First Time - Council expands resident-first parking program ahead of another busy summer season

Just in time for summer, Wasaga Beach residents will have more free places to park near the beachfront than ever before.

Following direction from Council, Beach Areas 1 and 2 will operate as municipal parking lots for the first time, joining New Wasaga and Allenwood Beach as waterfront locations where residents with a valid digital Resident Parking Permit can park free of charge throughout the summer season.

The expansion comes as Wasaga Beach prepares for another exciting summer season featuring more than 80 live music performances, the new Wasaga BeachLife Festival and Midway, expanded waterfront celebrations, and signature events along the world’s longest freshwater beach

“Summer in Wasaga Beach is about making memories at the waterfront, and we want residents to be able to enjoy the beach as easily as possible,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “Council introduced free resident parking in 2023 to make it easier and more affordable for residents to enjoy the waterfront, and now we’re expanding that benefit to Beach Areas 1 and 2 for the very first time. At a time when costs are high, this is one small way we can help residents save money, stay close to home, and enjoy more of what makes summer in Wasaga Beach special — from the waterfront and live music to family events and evenings by the beach.”

The expansion reflects Council’s continued commitment to improving resident access to the waterfront while supporting a vibrant summer tourism season.

The Victoria Day long weekend in Wasaga Beach has always meant something special to me.

Not just as Mayor, but as someone who grew up here my whole life.

If you were around in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, you know exactly what this place was when summer arrived. The first warm weekend would hit, and suddenly the whole town came alive. Cars cruising the strip all day long. Music blasting out the windows. Packed patios. Lineups for ice cream. The beach shoulder to shoulder. Everyone coming here for the same reason — because Wasaga Beach was the summer destination in Ontario.

And honestly, with our rolling sand dunes and 14 kilometers of warm shallow beach, there is nowhere else in the world, let alone the province, quite like it.

You’d spend the whole day at the beach, hit the arcades at night, grab food with friends, run into people you hadn’t seen since the year before, and somehow end up staying out way later than you planned. Wakestock weekends. Fireworks over the bay. Busy river days. Go karts. Waterslides. Concerts. The energy here has always been unforgettable, and for so many families across Ontario, some of their best memories were made right here in Wasaga.

That’s why the work happening now matters so much.

We all know this town has gone through changes over the years. We’ve seen challenges. We’ve seen parts of the beachfront struggle. But we’ve also never stopped believing in what could become again.

Today, we’re building toward that future. The redevelopment happening at Beach Area 1 and across our community is about bringing new life back to the heart of Wasaga while protecting everything people already love about this place.

New public spaces.

Better infrastructure.

Improved roads and streetscapes.

More family-friendly attractions.

Year-round tourism.

New businesses, hotels, housing, trails, parks, and gathering spaces that will help Wasaga thrive for generations to come.

The vision behind is simple: preserve the beach, protect the natural beauty that makes this place special, and create a stronger, more vibrant community for residents and visitors.

Because this town has always been more than just a beach town.
It’s home.

And now, watching a new generation experience Wasaga for the first time — seeing kids run into the water in May even when it’s freezing cold, hearing families laugh on the boardwalk, seeing patios and seasonal businesses opening up — it reminds me why so many of us never left.

This community is growing. Evolving. Improving.

But the feeling of summer in Wasaga Beach? That part never changes.

To everyone visiting this weekend, whether you’ve been coming here for 30 years or this is your very first trip, welcome.

Summer starts here. ☀️🌊🏖️🍦🚗🎶❤️
