Every hike into Gros Morne’s backcountry is an adventure, and finding fossils hidden amongst the cliffs is always so exciting for our guests.

These ancient imprints are reminders that this wild and rugged landscape was once alive with creatures we can only imagine today. To hold a piece of that history in your hands or even just to see it in the rock under your boots is a humbling reminder of just how old and powerful this place is.

The last fishing charter pulls into the dock, just as the sun dips behind the hills. Rods in, smiles wide, another day well spent on the bay.

Up in the lighthouse, two lovers look down over it all… still dreaming of the concert and hoping to catch a sky full of stars once the sun sets.

Early this morning, I crossed the bay to pick up a missing buoy and I was absolutely smacked in the face by the beauty of our community.

Standing there, I couldn’t help but imagine what the early settlers of Bonne Bay must have woken up to each day, although I doubt they had much time to enjoy the view. The layered hills, the calm water, the light breaking through the trees over the Tablelands and the Shoal Brook United Church, it all stops you in your tracks. That whole side of the South Arm is unfortunately now resettled and part of Parks Canada land, but you can still feel the quiet magic of the place.

Sir William Logan, an early geologist, described Bonne Bay South as “a grand and impressive display of the Earth's inner workings, laid bare by time and sea.”

And standing there this morning, I felt exactly that.
