On the banks of the Rhine, Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen offer two very different travel experiences just a short distance apart. One feels like a fairytale town frozen in time, while the other blends history, river views, and a more urban Swiss atmosphere.
Stein am Rhein is famous for its perfectly preserved medieval old town, where fresco-painted facades, cobblestone streets, and half-timbered houses create a storybook setting. Every corner feels decorative, almost like walking through an open-air museum.
Schaffhausen, on the other hand, is larger and more dynamic. It has a charming old town of its own, but also serves as the gateway to one of Switzerlandโs most powerful natural attractions, the Rhine Falls.
