🇨🇭 Swiss Food Rules: Raclette Edition

Rule 1: Melt the cheese.
Rule 2: Don’t rush it.
Rule 3: Potatoes are not optional.
Rule 4: Pickles and onions belong on the plate.
Rule 5: And when the cheese gets serious… a little Schnaps might be required. 😉

Yesterday, while using my phone, a memory suddenly popped up, and with it, a little trip down memory lane. 💭❤️ In this video, my daughter, then probably six or seven years old, is walking through an Edelweiss aircraft, proudly helping the crew distribute the little Swiss chocolates they give passengers before landing.

But the story actually started years before that. Her dad flew often with Swiss and Edelweiss, and whenever he came home, our daughter would run to him with the same question: “Papa, did you bring me a purprizze?” 🥰 And of all the things he could bring home, even things much more valuable, her greatest treasure was always that little piece of Swiss chocolate from the plane.

That chocolate became a ritual. A little taste of Papa coming home. A little taste of Switzerland. 🇨🇭And then, years later, something rather magical happened:

In 2017, she was cast to be part of an Edelweiss commercial. ✈️🌴 She arrived at Zurich Airport and suddenly found herself surrounded by a wonderful production crew who looked after her, did her hair, brought her drinks and sweets, and made the whole experience feel incredibly special. The commercial was staged inside the aircraft as if the passengers were travelling to the Maldives. Although she didn’t actually fly there, she got to be part of that little adventure right on the plane. Officially she became an Edelweiss-Chind. 🇨🇭❤️✈️

In Switzerland, especially among the older generations, you were either a “Migros-Chind” or a “Coop-Chind”. Your family shopped at one or the other, and you grew up with that little sense of loyalty. Perhaps that’s what heritage really is: not the big attractions we consciously teach our children, but the tiny rituals, tastes, sounds and memories that quietly become part of who we are…like a little choquies 😊 🇨🇭
